Francis E. Egan

Mr. Francis E. Egan, 89, of Portland, died unexpectedly on Monday, December 22, 2014 at Maine Medical Center. Born in Portland on November 30, 1925, Francis was the son of the late Edward and Josephine (Donaghue) Egan. He graduated from Cheverus High School, Class of 1944. Frank married Mary Christine Michaud on 1950. She predeceased him in 1972. On October 24, 1984 he married Dorothy Ann (Ramsay) Nugent. Frank enlisted with the United States Navy during WWII, serving on the USS Sangamon CVE26 and aboard the USS Pergrine AMS 373. After he was released from active duty he joined the US Naval Reserve and was recalled to active duty for the Korean War serving on board the USS New Jersey BB62. Frank was released from active duty in 1952 again joining the US Naval Reserve. Once again, Frank was called to active duty as a US Navy Recruiter during the Vietnam Conflict. He served as a Chief Quartermaster and retired after 22 years of service. Following his discharge, Frank worked for 17 years at H.P. Hood and a short time with Regional Transportation Program, the Maine National Bank and the Northern Diagnostic Laboratories. An active member of his community, Frank was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 101, the American Legion Post 17, Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 832, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3, Uniformed Services Disabled Retirees, the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association and the Portland Boys and Girls Club Alumni Association. In addition, Frank was also enjoyed Senior Beano at St. Pius X Church. In addition to his parents and his first wife, Frank was predeceased by his siblings, Brian Egan, Genevieve Egan Simpson, Gerald Egan, Patricia Egan Reddy and Robert Egan. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Ann (Nugent) Egan of Portland; daughters, Deborah A. Nugent of Standish, Eileen M. Nugent of Limerick, Susan N. Willey and husband Richard of Portland; sons, Richard W. Nugent of Limerick, James M. Nugent of Portland and Paul F. Nugent of Portland; grandchildren, Corey E. Willey and Courtney E. Willey. Also survived by his sister-in-law, Geraldine Egan, several nieces, nephews and god-children. Visiting Hours will be held from 2-6PM on Sunday at the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited on Monday at 10:15AM in the Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave. Portland.
