Forrest S. Hutchins

Forrest S. Hutchins, 91, of Phillips, Maine, died at his home on Sunday, March 15, 2009. Forrest was born in Cape Porpoise on September 7, 1917 to Victor and Elizabeth Seavey Hutchins and attended local schools. On February 4, 1939, he married Arlene M. Leach. They enjoyed 45 happy years together until her death on July 1, 1984. As a young man Forrest worked in the Sanford Mills and at New England Ship Building where he worked on Liberty ships. He was drafted during World War II and served in the U. S. Navy with the V-5 Division /Ordinance Carrier vessel 13: Ben FranklinAfter being blown off the ship he floated until the Essex arrived and he was pulled up by a friend from Sanford, Gerard Morin.He was discharged on December 13, 1945 with the rank of AOM 3c. After leaving the military, Forrest returned to the Sanford mills where he worked as a screen printer until the mills closed. He than ran his own lobster boat for 20 years and then went to work for Lavalley Lumber where he stayed until his retirement. He had been a member of the Bauneg Beg Grange since 1941, a member of the Preble Masonic Lodge in Sanford since 1949, The Royal Arch Masons, The Commandry and Kora Temple Shrine. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 19 and the VFW Post 9935. Forrest was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Arlene, and his brothers Everett and Edward . Surviving are his son, Wayne K. Hutchins and his wife Carol of Springvale; two granddaughters, Stacey Badger and her husband Arthur and Melissa Badger and her husband Michael; two great grandchildren, Justin Badger and Hannah Badger, his favorite niece and nephew, Barbara and Ray Drown, his companion Dorothy Haggan and all of the Haggan family who loved him as Grampa Forrest. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, March 18th from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM with a Masonic service taking place during the evening hours at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale. Interment will be in the spring at Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.
