Florence "Flossie" Crockett, 92, a long time resident of Springvale, ME, passed away on Friday, October 17, 2008, at the Monarch Center in Saco, Maine. Florence was born in Brewer, Maine on May 21, 1916, the daughter of Wallace and Jennie Steeves. Prior to living in Springvale, Florence attended Bangor High School, graduated from Beals College in Bangor and worked for Bangor Hydroelectric Company after graduating. In 1940, Florence married Leonard E. Crockett and they moved to Augusta where she worked for the IRS. In 1949, she and Len moved to the Sanford/Springvale area. Florence returned to her career, working for the Director of Vocational Education at the Sanford High School. Upon retirement Florence and Len spent many years traveling the United States and became winter residents of Nokomis, Florida. At the age of 60, Florence learned to play tennis and became an avid, and excellent player. While her husband, Leonard, served in the United States Navy, Florence traveled by his side to Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Indiana, and Michigan beginning in 1943. Always a participant, Florence worked in the Naval Research Laboratory, receiving the Army-Navy Production emblem for "Skill, industry, and devotion on the production front of the greatest war in history". Florence was an active member of the North Parish Congregational Church of Sanford. She taught Sunday School, was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and sang soprano for many years in the church choir. She had a great faith in the Lord and was sparingly content with life and death. Florence was a loving wife, and a supportive and influential mother. She was an athletic, independent, yet, humble lady. She always had lessons to teach and examples to set and live by.Florence is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Leonard Crockett, whom she courageously cared for in their home through a lengthy illness until he passed away on November 30, 1997. As the second youngest in her family, she was also predeceased by her siblings, Milton Steeves, Clifford Steeves, Alice Carr, Cora Sleeper and Dorothy Clark. Surviving are her daughters, Sue Lander and her husband Jeff of Windham, ME, Nancy Faulkner and her husband James, of Kennebunkport, ME; three grandchildren, Kristen Neilson and her husband Timothy of Burlington, VT, Tyler Faulkner and Brendan Faulkner, her great-granddaughter, Audrey Elizabeth Neilson and her brother-in-law Elwood Sleeper of Kennebunk, ME who she was thankful and most fortunate to have had as a companion and friend.Visiting hours for Florence Crockett will be on Monday, October 20th from 6 to 8 p.m., at The Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, in Springvale, Maine. The service celebrating the life of Florence Crockett will be on Tuesday, October 21st at 11:00 AM at the North Parish Congregation Church, 893 Main Street in Sanford, Maine. Interment will be at Brooklawn Cemetery in South Portland.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Alzheimer's Association225 N.
