Ferne E. Davis

July 17, 1929 ~ December 29, 2024
Resided in:
Sanford, Maine
Ferne E. Davis passed away on December 29, 2024 at the Lodges Assisted Living Facility in Sanford.
She was Born on July 17, 1929 to William and Carrie Smith. She was one of four children. Her siblings, Eri; Clara; and Mildren were much older than her by almost 20 years. She lived in the same vicinity of Main Street and Boothby Ave since she was 9 years old.
She met her future husband as kids when they all played in the “neighborhood”. She married Ray Davis August 16 , 1947. They were married 67 years until Ray passed in 2015. They had three children- Linda, Bob and Ken.
Ferne was a mill worker spending many years in the Waterboro leather mill and Brooks Woolen in Sanford.
Ferne and Ray retired early and traveled extensively. Two different trips around the world with Ray’s parents Bun and Louie Davis. Many winters in Florida and they especially loved visiting Disney World. Their last big trip together was a cruise to Alaska.
The family camp on Mousam Lake in Ham’s Cove was a favorite in the summers. There were tons of boats and families there since the 1950’s which instilled a love of the lake for many generations to come.
Ferne drove the boats, rode a Vespa Scooter and drove many different kinds of cars from a Model A to a mini van and her some of her favorites were the yellow Volkswagen Bug and the PT Cruiser.
She attended many sporting events; school concerts and anything her grandkids and great grandkids were participating in (until she couldn’t see the balls anymore.)
She lived independently and continued to drive until she was 94. She frequented Shaw’s; her hair dressers on Main Street and Rosa’s for red kidney beans all within a one mile from her home. She went out to lunch most week days with her daughter who was also her chauffer to lunch any other appointments.
She moved to the Lodges in March of 2024. Cookies and coffee ice cream were favorite desserts! Cinnamon Toast Crunch at breakfast and Cookies at all times of day became the main dishes while at the Lodge’s.
She was predeceased by her parents; her siblings; her in laws; her husband; her son Bob: her son in law Gil and her great grandson AJ. She is survived by her daughter Linda Dionne; her son Ken Davis and his wife Sue; and her daughter in law Sandy Davis.
She will be missed by her grandkids Kelly Roulliard (Mark); Scott Davis (Stacy); Michelle Sheppard (Scott); Chrissy Dionne and Todd Davis (Shauna) as well as her great grand kids Madi and Meg Sheppard; Aryanna Davis; Jacob Tayven and Emmy Davis.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Lodge’s, especially Meg and the staff at Affinity Hospice for their help and kindness while caring for her like she was their family too.
A time of visitation will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2024 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. with a memorial service at 3:00 P.M. at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the AJ Davis Memorial Fishing Derby on 2/23/25!

I knew Ferne for most of my life. Initially, most of my contacts with her came from family gatherings and times at the lake. There was a period during which I was living in Providence, Rhode Island, the Washington DC area, and Buffalo, New York, and didn’t get back to Maine very often. More recently, my wife Rene Bush, and I made a point of visiting Sanford and Wells Beach every year that we could, and during this period, we always visited Ray and Ferne and subsequent to Ray’s passing, we made a point of visiting Ferne. I think she was always happy to see us and my wife, Renee, was very taken with her independence and straightforward approach to life. You knew where you stood with Ferne. We always enjoyed talking with her and she provided a connection to my mother and aunt Bun. We were both very fond of her and we shall miss her.
We extend our sincere condolences to the rest of the immediate family and her close friends.
