Eva A. Ledger
August 14, 1910 ~ April 21, 2020
South Portland - Eva A. Ledger, 109, died on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
Eva was born on Aug. 14, 1910, in Lyndonville, Vermont, a little bit of a town near St. Johnsbury. She was one of 12 children and moved to Portland with her family during World War II. As a child she enjoyed riding around in the car with the top down and square dancing. She graduated from Deering High School in the class of 1930.
She first entered the workforce when she was in high school at the age of 16, at an ice cream factory on Commercial Street. After graduating high school, she worked as a bookkeeper for Emery-Waterhouse, a home improvement store until 1933. After having her three children she worked hard to provide for her children. She was fiercely independent and she worked multiple jobs including Montgomery Ward, Lancaster Furniture, Philco Wholesalers selling TVs, and as an accountant for Coca Cola. She retired in 1991, and then started to babysit the neighborhood children until she was 88.
In her free time, she loved to read and garden. She was connected with the local library outreach program and she would read anything that came her way including newspapers. She was always up to date with the news. Her family will remember her for her can-do attitude, being independent and instilling those qualities in the generations she has left behind.
Eva was predeceased by her 11 siblings, Hazel, Marion, Agnes, Annie, Flora, Charles, Albert, Raymond, Richard, William, and Eugene; one grandchild; one great grandchild; and one great great grandchild. She is survived by her daughters, Rita Proctor of FL, Kathleen David of AR; son, Robert Ledger of NH; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; and 8 great great great grandchildren.
