Ernest F. Payeur, 83, of Springvale, died on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at the Newton Center in Sanford.Ernest was born in Sanford on January 8, 1925 to Arthur and Adele (Morin) Payeur and attended local schools. He worked for seven years as a lumberjack in his youth. He then worked as a construction worker for Local 976, retiring in 1987. He worked at job sites for the Maine Turnpike Authority and the Seabrook Station. After retirement, Ernest took up traveling. He visited places all over the United States and Canada, traveling by RV. A trip to Alaska was one of the highlights of his travels. He was a member of the Notre Dame Church in Springvale as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Springvale Council, 3rd and 4th Degree.Ernest was fond of his dog, Duke, taking many longs walks with him. He loved birds and kept several birdfeeders and birdhouses around his home. He always had some sort of construction project in progress at his house. Ernest helped all of his children build their first homes. He was very clever as figuring out how to make or fix just about anything. He once built a life-sized playhouse for his daughters, all out of scrap wood.Ernest was frugal. He made time to help out others whenever there was a need. He always kept in touch with the members of his very large family, and will be missed.Ernest was predeceased by his first wife, Theresa (Ouellette) Payeur.Surviving are his wife, Yolande (Vachon) Payeur of Springvale; six children, Richard Payeur of Westbrook, Maurice Payeur of Sanford, Raynald Payeur of Gillette, Wyoming, Rita Soulard of Biddeford, Norman Payeur of Westbrook and Janet Boivin of Sanford. He is also survived by four stepchildren; Pauline Bragg of Barrington, NH, Michael Normand of Sanford, Roland Normand of Sanford and Suzanne Paiement of Sanford; a brother, Paul Payeur of Springvale; nine grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, December 12th at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street in Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 13th at 10:00 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church, located on Payne Street in Springvale. Interment will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the Alzheimer's Association - Main Chapter, 170 U.S. Route One, Falmouth, ME 04105.To leave the family a message of condolence, please click on the condolences tab to the left.
