Elizabeth B. Sweeney

PORTLAND - Elizabeth B. Sweeney, 95, of State Street, died March 25, 2013, at Maine Medical Center. She was born in Portland on August 30, 1917, a daughter of Michael and Mary (Folan) Herward. She graduated from Cathedral High School and Northeastern Business College. Elizabeth worked for the City of Portland, first for the Welfare Department, and then transferred to the Public Works Department where she was secretary to Commissioner Edward M. Hunt. She also worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield. She married Walter F. Sweeney Jr. on June 25, 1951. Family was the focus of her life and she was very proud of their accomplishments. She a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and was a member of the Auxiliary of the Legion of Mary. She is predeceased by her husband who died December 10, 1996. She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Gagnon of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania; a son, John Sweeney of Portland; a sister, Katherine Moffett of Falmouth; and five grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:00 am, Monday, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. You were a wonderful friend and roommate to Aunt Jo Elizabeth and she is going to miss you so much.I will miss you to and I enjoyed talking with you.You will be in my prayers and thoughts.
