SOUTH PORTLAND Elizabeth Betty Newell, 76, died Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Maine Medical Center. Born in Portland on January 19, 1939, Betty was the daughter of William and Albina (Gorey) Hunter. She married Albert E. Newell, Jr. in 1955. Together, they shared 42 years of marriage until he predeceased her in 1997. Betty worked with Nachi Bearing and the Coast Guard Exchange for several years. She was an active member on 2 bowling leagues and she enjoyed watching the Patriots, listening to Elvis and she loved her cats, Tessa and Lilly. Betty was a communicant of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Scarborough where she was a former choir member. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty is predeceased by her sisters, Marjorie and Frances. She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Newell of AZ, Donna Gagne-Wray and husband Billy Wray of Gorham, Laurie Carr and Chris Gill of South Portland; son, Michael Newell of Old Orchard Beach. Also survived by 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and a very dear friend, Dave Sawyer. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 from 10-11:15AM at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 11:15AM on Tuesday followed by a 12PM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough.
