Elizabeth "Betty" Davis Faulkner, 91, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went to be with her husband, George on March 21st at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Betty was born in Sanford on December 7, 1925, the daughter of Charles and Lela Forbes Davis. She was educated at Sanford schools and graduated from Sanford High School in 1940. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University and then went on to attend and graduate from Forsyth Dental Hygiene School.After graduation, she worked for the State of Maine, teaching dental health to schoolchildren in many of the state's most rural schools. It was while working for the State of Maine that she met her husband, Dr. George A. Faulkner, Jr., who was maintaining the state's mobile dental unit. Together they traveled to the Indian reservations in Washington and Aroostook Counties as well as many of the rural towns that were without regular dental care.They returned to Sanford to start a family and set up a dental practice. With the beginning of the Korean War, Dr. Faulkner was called back by the Army. Together with their growing family, they traveled together to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas ending up at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina.In 1953 when Dr. Faulkner was released from active duty, they returned to Maine settling in Alfred where they lived until moving to Cape Porpoise in 1981.The Faulkner children remember a happy childhood spent in Alfred, summers in Shapleigh on Mousam Lake and ski weekends at their camp in Rangeley. Mrs. Faulkner loved to travel and together with her husband and children travelled several timed across the country, went on trips to Europe, Hawaii and Alaska. With their great circle of friends, they went on many golfing and skiing adventures. After Dr. Faulkner's retirement, they spent summers in Economy, Nova Scotia where along with their children, restored the antique cape on land owned by the Faulkners since 1763.Besides being an avid traveler who seemed to always have her suitcase packed, she was an accomplished seamstress, loved to knit, enjoyed golf, skiing, swimming and entertaining. She was famous for her Santa face cookies that she made for every one of her childrens' school Christmas parties. Most importantly, she adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was very proud of their accomplishments.She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Fern Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Alfred.Mrs. Faulkner was predeceased by her husband, Dr. George A. Faulkner, Jr. and her son, Peter D. Faulkner. She is survived by her children, George A. Faulkner, III and his wife, Deborah (Mayne) of Jackson, Dr. James M. Faulkner and his wife, Nancy (Crockett) of Charlotte, Vermont, Richard D. Faulkner and his wife, Suzanne (Morin) of Sanford, John E. Faulkner and his wife, Jane (Chadbourne) of Harpswell, Jane E. Faulkner of Hermon, and Joanne Faulkner Dickson and her husband, James, of Pittsburg, N.H. 12 grandchildren: Kristen Faulkner Neilson, Jeffrey and Andrew Faulkner, Sadie Faulkner Shaw, Michael and Matthew Faulkner, Sarah Houston O'Keeffe, Amanda Houston Sevigny, Cameron Houston, Tyler, Brendan and Masha Faulkner, 14 great- grandchildren, and her cousin, Donna Forbes Fields of Sanford.The family wishes to thank the Atria Community in Kennebunk for their great care and attention given their mother and grandmother. Thank you to the wonderful people there, her last years were happy and full of life. Honoring Mrs. Faulkner's wishes, there will be a simple graveside ceremony officiated by Rev. Peter Leon at the Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred later in the spring.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
