Born in:
Portland, ME
Resided in:
Portland, ME
Elizabeth (“Betty”) Concannon died on 19 February 2025, after a brief period of declining health, in Gosnell Memorial Hospice, in Scarborough. She was born in Portland on 27 July 1927, and was a life-long Portland resident. She grew up during the Great Depression; was an adolescent throughout World War II; was married in 1947; raised a family; bought a home and resided in it for sixty-three years; widowed in 1986; made many, many friends and kept them. Politically, she was always an unwavering New Dealer, who took it for granted that FDR had once-and-for-all got it right. She was a generous, warm, neighborly, intelligent, empathetic, and amiable person—and a good-listener. She was a gifted artist and taught ceramics classes out of her home for many years. She had an uncanny ability to endear herself to others, even those whom she had just met; this talent only increased with age. She was physically small but decidedly untimid; she took pleasure in proving wrong those who underestimated her abilities. She mowed her own lawn well into her eighties, drove her car until she was ninety-four, and cooked Sunday dinner for her family until she was ninety-five. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother; her husband; a son; numerous in-laws and others of her large extended family, and very recently by her close friend, Jean. She is survived by a son; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; a host of nephews and nieces; and her special, decades-long friends, Janet, Jan, and Mickey. Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, February 26 from 12-2PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Graveside Service will follow at 2:30PM at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
