Elizabeth A. Rankin
February 1, 1948 – January 11, 2025
Elizabeth A. Rankin, 76, of Shapleigh, Maine, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.
Born on February 1, 1948, in Fall River, Massachusetts, to Frank and Rebecca (Orrell) Darlington, Elizabeth grew up in Island Park and Newport, Rhode Island. She graduated from Durfee High School and began her working life as a soda jerk at Pete & Flo’s in Newport, where she met the love of her life, Paul Rankin, Sr. After a whirlwind three-month courtship, they married in 1972 and went on to share 44 beautiful years together, raising two children and building a life filled with love and adventure, until Paul’s passing in 2016.
Elizabeth was a devoted mother who initially chose to stay home and care for her young family. Later, alongside her husband, she ventured into the restaurant business, owning and operating two establishments together. In 1989, the family relocated to Maine, where Elizabeth held various roles, including working at the Sawmill Restaurant in Newfield, the Fi-Wood Restaurant in Sanford, and Marden’s, where she worked until her retirement.
A creative and artistic soul, Elizabeth found joy in painting, drawing, and ceramics. Her exceptional sewing skills were a testament to her love for her family, as she lovingly crafted clothing, including her daughter’s prom and wedding gowns. Her kindness extended beyond her human family; Elizabeth had a deep affection for animals and found happiness in feeding raccoons, opossums, and birds.
Elizabeth was a quiet, nurturing woman who cherished the time spent at home with her family. At the same time, her warmth and friendliness earned her many lifelong friendships, which she deeply valued. She was a hardworking and dedicated mother whose love and devotion were evident in every aspect of her life.
She is survived by her children, Paul Rankin, Jr. of Shapleigh, and Becky Place and her husband Richard of Waterboro; her four grandchildren, Alex Rouillard of Westbrook, Jasmine Bennington of Biddeford, Paul Rankin III of Florida and Maximus Place of South Portland; and two great-grandchildren, Dawson and Dorothy.
Family and friends are invited to honor Elizabeth’s life on Monday, January 27, 2025, at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following at 6:30 p.m.
Elizabeth’s kindness, creativity, and unwavering love will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Gram was someone who could always make your day. She knew exactly how to make you smile and laugh. No matter how bad your day was.
Her and I shared a love for art. One memory I have, was sitting at her table and drawing a circle for something and her complimenting the circle. That gave me so much confidence.
Becky & Paul, I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a truly amazing and selfless woman. Hugs and love to you both and your families.
Liz was one of my band moms. Always there to help us with whatever we needed.
I’ll always think of Liz when we have our 4th of July celebrations. Her smile and kindness were evident in every visit. We will remember her (especially on that day) always.
She is my husband’s aunt.
