PORTLAND - Eleanor O. Farmer, 91, formerly of Cape Elizabeth, died on August 29, 2011 at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence. Eleanor was born in Portland on June 28, 1930, the daughter of Joseph W. and Helen Steele O'Neill. Eleanor attended local schools and was a 1936 graduate of Cathedral High School. She was a homemaker most of her life but did some legal secretary work for George Mitchell and Charles Allen. Eleanor married Percy L. Farmer in 1942 and they made their home in Cape Elizabeth. They were communicants of Holy Cross Church in South Portland. They also enjoyed wintering in Zephyr, Florida. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Percy L. Farmer in 2005; a daughter, Kathleen McChesney in 1990, a brother, Joseph O'Neill in 1946; a sister, Margaret Quinn in 1997; and a grandson, Joseph LaPlante in 2008. She is survived by a grandson, Matthew McChesney and his wife Kelly of Humble, TX; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth McChesney of Humble, TX; a nephew, Larry Quinn and his wife, Patricia, of Belfast; and a great-niece, Wendy Forkner of East Corinth. Prayers will be recited at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, August 31 at the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Corner of Broadway and Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
