Edward J McSweeney
February 12, 1941 ~ November 22, 2018
South Portland - Edward J. McSweeney, 77, passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with his wife by his side.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut on February 12, 1941, Ed was the son of the late John and Ann (Murphy) McSweeney. He graduated from Hartford High School Class of 1959.
In the late 1970's Ed met his friend's sister, Nancy, at a Memorial Day Picnic. Neither Ed nor Nancy was aware, but that day sparked the beginning of a nearly 40 year marriage. Ed and Nancy were married on May 17, 1980. Together, they enjoyed traveling the world with dear friends, Father Bill McCarthy & Sister Bernadette Sheldon, on pilgrimages during their employment with My Father's House Retreat Center in Connecticut. Ed and Nancy loved their time in Connecticut, but decided to move to Maine in 2007.
Nancy was originally from the Portland area, but Ed hadn't spent much time here. However, anyone who met Ed wasn't a stranger for very long. He had a unique way of establishing friendships very quickly. He enjoyed his daily coffee with his friends at McDonalds, was an avid fan of any sport, especially New England teams. He was a very faithful man who began his mornings by praying over his wife, and ended his days with a nightly prayer. In addition to living his faith, he was active in the Knight of Columbus Council 11747 as a 4th degree.
All in all, Ed was a fun loving, hardworking, and faithful man who was a loving husband to Nancy. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Nancy McSweeney; sisters, Joann Naldi and husband Richard of North Carolina, Mary McSweeney of North Carolina, and Linda Harrison of West Hartford, Connecticut. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Susan Markham and husband Bill, Stephen Naldi, Kimberly Roberts and Jeffrey Naldi and wife Rebecca; and a dear friend, Mary Alice Higgins.
Visiting Hours celebrating Ed's life will be held on Thursday, November 29 from 4-6PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the Funeral Home on Friday, November 30 at 9:15AM followed by a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 Route 1, Scarborough, Maine 04074
