Edna Hollywood York

PORTLAND - Edna Hollywood York, 98, of Portland, died Saturday July 30, 2011 at Seaside Nursing Home in Portland. She was born on March 31, 1913 in Portland, a daughter of Peter J. and Anna McKale Hollywood. Edna was a 1931 graduate of Portland High School and was a graduate of Farmington State Teachers College. She married Lester A. York, Jr. in 1942. Edna taught school in Portland for several years. She later earned certification as a social worker and worked in the Biddeford Schools. Edna also worked for many years as the bookkeeper in the family businesses, the Hollywood Garage on State Street and the Hollywood Cafe' on Free Street. She was active in the Cheverus Mother's Club and was a longtime member of the Portland Country Club where she enjoyed playing tennis and golf. Edna was predeceased by her husband Lester in 1994; a son Gregory P. York; four sisters, Mary Conneen, Irene Oberg, Mildred Gross, Rita Doyle; a brother P. James Hollywood, Jr. Survivors include a son Lester A. York, 3rd , M.D. of Portland, 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 9:30 to 10:30 Wednesday at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m. An 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Pius X Church, Ocean Ave. Portland.
