Sanford, Maine -- Edmond H. Lapierre, 91, of Sanford, Maine died peacefully on January 3, 2014, at Greenwood Center in Sanford, Maine, after a period of failing health. The family would like to thank the staff at Greenwood Center for all the caring, kindness and support they showed to both Eddie and his family while in their care. Edmond (Eddie) was born on November 6, 1922 in Sanford, Maine. He was the son of Wilfred Lapierre and Virginia (Therrien) Lapierre. He married Gertrude Chevalier of Sanford, Maine on June 25, 1953. Soon after, they purchased their home on Beulah Street, where they resided together all of their married life. Eddie spent his early years working in the textile mills in Sanford, Maine. When the mills shut down in the early 1950's, he found employment at Champlain Box Company in Rochester, NH. When the mills reopened in Sanford, he returned to work at what would come to be known as Brooks Woolen International. He retired from Brooks Woolen, where he made many life long friends, at the age of 70.Eddie was an avid woodworker, painter and gardener. He built many birdhouses and loved to watch all the wonderful wildlife they brought to his yard. He enjoyed long walks around Number One Pond on any day the weather cooperated. He was a long time member of the unofficial "McDonald's Breakfast Club," where he spent many mornings with his good friends telling jokes and talking politics over a cup of coffee. He attended Mass each Sunday at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, after which he would take leisurely drives in his truck, and stop for a chat if he found himself in your neighborhood. He had a great laugh; a wonderful sense of humor; and, who could forget that mustache!Although, Eddie and Gert did not have children of their own-they were like second parents to many of their nieces and nephews-who could always count on a special treat or box of Cracker Jacks when visiting their home. Edmond is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gertrude (Chevalier) Lapierre; his brother-in-law, Lionel Chevalier of Camp Ellis, Maine; sister-in-law, Jeannette (Chevalier) Whitten and her husband Richard Houle of Englewood, Florida; godson Mark Therrien; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Julie Therrien; his brother, Willie Lapierre; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and, his God Son, Steve Whitten. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at LaFrance-Lambert and Black Funeral Home located at 29 Winter Street in Sanford where a funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM.
