Edmond W. Chenard

Edmond W. Chenard, 90, of Springvale, died on Wednesday, July 17th at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.Ed was born in Springvale on May 21, 1923 to Patrick and Anna (Turmelle) Chenard where he grew up and attended Notre Dame School. He proudly served during World War II as a medic in the U.S. Army on Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Ed was a very hard worker and took pride in providing for his family. He held several jobs during his life including working in the Goodall Mills, Pioneer Plastics, Sprague Electric and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he stayed until his retirement in 1985. He was also involved in several notable construction projects including the construction of Pease Air Field, the Memorial Gym in Sanford, the grandstand wall at Goodall Park and the stone wall in Gowen Park. Ed was a devoted father. When his wife Laurette passed away at a young age he raised his children as a single parent and provided them with a loving home. He was a music lover and was particularly fond of Big Band and other music from his generation. He was an avid baseball fan and also enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events and other activities. Ed was a devout Catholic and had been a communicant of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish; he was also a member of the Sanford VFW. Ed will be remembered as a tenderhearted man with a gruff exterior. He was devoted father who took pride in his family and their accomplishments and will be dearly missed.Ed was predeceased by his wife, Laurette (Lachance) Chenard two sisters, Claire Steele and Gloria Chenard.Surviving are five children, Carol Legere and her husband Roland of Shapleigh, Gerald Chenard and his wife Sandee Murray of Stratham, New Hampshire, Rachel Chenard of Sanford, Robert Chenard of Sanford and Richard Chenard and his wife Diane Crawford of Sanford; three grandchildren, Lauren Legere and her husband Patrick Walsh of Amherst, New Hampshire, Lucas Legere and his partner Gueorgui Traykov of Dorchester, Massachusetts and Alan Chenard of Springvale; two great grandsons, Merrick and Colton Walsh, both of Amherst, New Hampshire and a sister, Lorette Noel of Virginia.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 22nd at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church, located on Payne Street in Springvale. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider sending a memorial contribution in Ed's name to the Maine Veterans Home Activities Fund, 290 US Route One, Scarborough, Maine 04074.The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Southern Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for the care and compassion shown to Ed and his family during his final days.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the Condolences tab at left.
