Westbrook- Earlene "Earl" S. Stein, 81, of Westbrook, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Maine Medical Center due to complications from Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Earlene was born in Warren, the youngest of 5 children to Herbert and Grace Simmons. In 1967, Earlene moved to Portland with her five children as a single parent. Shortly after moving to Portland, Earlene studied for and received her CNA certification, and began a long and rewarding career at Maine Medical Center, in the Newborn Nursery. Earlene often referred to the babies as "my babies." Anytime she saw a baby she wondered if it was one that she had taken care of. During her career in the Newborn Nursery, Earlene had the pleasure of caring for three of her four grandsons. She was well thought of among her peers, doctors and nurses earning the reputation of "nursery boss." Earlene was an avid reader and baseball fan. She enjoyed going to her grandson's baseball games and loved to watch the Red sox, hardly ever missing a game. Earlene was predeceased by her mother, father, brothers (Herbert, George, and Phillip), sister (Dorothy) and daughter, Arlette Baldwin. She is survived by her four sons, Joseph and his wife, Anna, James and his wife, Patricia, Howard, Bruce and his wife, Lynne; grandchildren Damon Baldwin & his partner Kristen Kelsey, Joseph Stein, DO, & his wife Jamie, James Stein and his wife Joanna, Matthew Stein and his partner Amber Huffman; great grandchildren Ryan, Oliver and Taylor. She is also survived by her former daughter in-law, Maryellen Stein with whom she remained close. Earlene's family would like to thank Heather from Comfort Keepers who provided homecare support since December of 2015, and the staff at Maine Medical Center (Gibson Wing) for making her last days peaceful and comfortable. At the request of Earlene, services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME 04101. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Remembering Earlene & the wonderful cheesecake & peanut butter fudge she made for all family events!

    – Doug & Liz Alofs

  2. Earlene was our neighbor when I lived in Rockland Maine on South St., about 1965 or 1966. We were the Gamages that lived across the street. I would hang out with her daughter Arlette, I believe she and I were about the same age. I see she predeceased her mother, it’s strange that I was to read about Earlene’s passing because I was just thinking about Arlette a few days ago. This family was a very much God loving family, I remember Earlene would go to her families house on Christmas and I’m sure they attended church and then they wouldn’t come home until evening to have their tree. God Bless Earlene for bringing up her children to love God. My condolences go out to her children and their families.

    – Gladys Hutchinson
