Earl J. Johnstone
Earl J. Johnstone, 93, of Sanford, died at the Greenwood Center on Wednesday, November 23, 2016.Earl was born in Clinton, Massachusetts on February 5, 1923 to John and Ida (Lewis) Johnstone. When he was a young child his family moved to Alfred where he grew up and attended local schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After completing his term he returned to Maine where he met and married Lorraine Beaulieu in 1948. Together they raised three children and shared 54 years of marriage until her death in 2002.During his working life Earl held several jobs including at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Pease Air Force Base and at some of the local mills before taking a job as a custodian with the Sanford School Department where he stayed for 25 years until his retirement. He had been a life member of the American Legion and enjoyed traveling with his wife. They had the opportunity to travel to many places together after his retirement. Earl will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his family and friends.Earl was predeceased by his wife Lorraine, by a daughter, Sandra Nichols and by a son, David Johnstone.Surviving are his son, Mark Johnstone, Sr. and his wife Darlene of Sanford; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.A graveside service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday, November 28th at the St. Ignatius Cemetery located on Berwick Road in Sanford.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
