Dudley F Coyne
May 14, 1935 ~ November 20, 2018
Scarborough - Dudley F. Coyne, 83, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at Maine Medical Center.
Dudley was born in Portland on May 14, 1935, the son of Irish immigrants, the late Dudley and Mary (Duffy) Coyne. Dudley was one of seven children and proudly grew up on Munjoy Hill. He attended Cathedral Grammar School and graduated from Cheverus High School. He received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Maine. At both Cheverus and UMO he was known as an outstanding basketball player. His record at University of Maine for most free throws in a game still stands. Following undergraduate school he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army at Gelnhausen, Germany; he once saw Elvis Presley sitting solo at the army base movie theater.
Dudley was a member of the Portland School System in administration at PREP, Lincoln Junior and King Middle Schools. His favorite years were those as Assistant Principal of Deering High School, from which his daughter graduated and whose faculty, staff and student body were truly special.
Dudley was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Constance (Connie) Coyne, who died last month on October 29. He is survived by his daughter, Mollie; sister, Barbara; and brother, William; many nieces and nephews; and a great number of loyal friends. He grew to love cats, especially Silhouette a black stray from Biddeford where he once coached and taught. He preferred his martinis with three olives.
A Graveside service was held on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.

Dudley was a true gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor. I had the pleasure knowing him when he was at Lincoln Jr. High, where my mother (V. Mingo) taught school. Rest In Peace. Judie Kelly

Dudley was a professional. He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful sensitivity for the challenged student. Dudley enjoyed his work as Assistant Principal at Deering High School and was respected by faculty and loved by his students. He was able to help many students in many ways. People did not know how he helped needy students. Dudley was a loving father to his daughter, Mollie, and was happy that she graduated in the top of her class. He was very proud of her. Rest In Peace Dudley.
