richard dillihunt, m.d.
PORTLAND: Dr. Richard “Dick” C. Dillihunt, of Portland passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 11th, 2023 at the age of 88. He was born in Hartford, CT in 1935, son of Charles and Mildred Dillihunt. He grew up in Winthrop, Maine and took immense pride working tirelessly at the pizzeria his parents operated, The OXBOW. He graduated pre-med from Tufts University in 1956 and continued on to University of Vermont Medical School where he graduated in 1960, earning the Roche Award, given to the student whose compassion and appreciation of patients’ needs promise distinguished service in the care of the sick. During his time in Burlington he met the love of his life, Jeannette Mimeault, a nurse at the DeGoesbriand Hospital. Following his proud service as a captain in the US Army in Missouri he landed his dream job as a surgical resident in Portland, Maine, which led to a 40 year career at the Maine Medical Center. His passion and dedication led to many contributions in the area of vascular surgery including performing the first kidney transplant in Maine in 1971 and his training of countless medical residents. His legacy beyond that is hallmarked by the compassion he showed towards his patients and his appreciation of his office staff and colleagues at Maine Surgical Care. A prolific writer, he penned numerous thought pieces on Universal Health Care and was a staunch advocate for affordable access to medical care for all. Together with his wife Jeannette, he raised six children who, in turn, expanded the family with 29 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Dick was a lover of all things Maine and he and Jeannette created a home in Portland that was a favorite destination for family where his children and grandchildren have a constant presence. Here he shared his passions for cooking and horticulture and was often found in the backyard tending to his flowers, the swimming pool and hosting big barbecues. He was an avid sports fan, especially the teams of all his children and grandchildren, never missing their games. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles “Bud” Dillihunt, a fellow outdoorsmen and founding member of the Turner Pond Club in Jackman, Maine. It was there that he shared his passion with many for the natural wonders of the Maine woods including countless trips to Turner Pond where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, tending to the cabins and preparing feasts for his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife Jeannette of 62 years and his children Barbara, Nancy, Joan, Bill, Eileen and Catherine and their loving spouses and his twenty-nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, May 15th from 4pm to 6pm at Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home,172 State Street, Portland. 3. DR. Dillihunt cared for my Mother when she developed a rare abnormality. He lead the surgical team who presented my Mother’s case at Grand Rounds. He was a true and caring friend to out family. I am so very proud to have known and chatted with him as we cruised the halls of MMC. My sincere condolences to his family.

  4. I was saddened to learn of Dr. Dillihunt’s passing. Our first meeting was to assist my son with a minor foot issue and then as a District 4 constituent during my tenure on the city council. He was a remarkable man with such kindness in his mannerisms, and he had an indisputable love for his family which he loved to chat about. Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss.

  9. I just want to say that your Husband and Dad was by far one of the kindest physicians I have ever met. I have worked at MMC for 39 years and will never forget his wonderful service and compassion to patients, colleagues and staff. I’m sure you know this already but he will always be remembered and thought of as admirable jovial human who will be remembered and missed. Thinking of you all at this time.

  10. I am so sorry for the passing of Dr.Dillihunt–I would be best known as the “babysitter” of their 6 children.Dr.Dillihunt was a role model for me–smart, kind, patient, funny and as the teenage babysitter he kept a close watch on me!We spent summers at Sebago Lake and I remember he would just get home and sit down to dinner –then his beeper would go off and he would calmly drive back to MMC.I admired him so…..love ,Kathy Kyle and Katie

  12. I am so heartbroken to hear of this loss. I spent a lot of time in their amazing backyard as a kid, tagging along with the Veroneaus. He was always so kind and generous, like the rest of the family. Dr Dillihunt also happened to have saved my own grandfather’s life in the mid-90s when he operated on him and our family cherished him for that as well.

My deepest condolences to the whole family.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.

  14. I first met Dick Dillihunt shortly after I moved to Maine, over 20 years ago. Dick, in addition to being a distinguished and respected head of vascular surgery at the Maine Medical Center was, like me, a proud and ardent supporter of the creation of a system of universal health care in Maine and the United States, despite the predictable disapproval of many of his colleagues.

He expressed his support in many essays, often published as opinion pieces in magazines and newspapers. One of Dick’s favorite achievements was his role in arranging for the controversial appearance of Dr. Danielle Martin, a Canadian Family Doctor and proponent of the Canadian health care system, at Maine Medical Center Surgical Grand Rounds. I think he enjoyed watching some of his colleagues on the medical staff, but especially in the executive suite, squirm a little.

Dick’s support for a universal health care system was one of the many ways he expressed his compassion and empathy for his patients – an essential characteristic of a truly great physician. That will be one of his many legacies.

  15. So sorry for uncle’s Dick passing….He is the one who provided our wedding « video » in 1986😊it was a hot thing back in those days…

My deepest sympathies to the family especially to aunt Jeanette. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

  16. To Entire Dillihunt Family,
Saddened to read of Dr. Dillihunt’s passing, deepest condolences. Fond memories of you all. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
    With sympathy, Vicki Vaughan
