dr. john locascio, jr.
Scarborough - Dr. John J. LoCascio, Jr., 67, passed away August 18, 2017 after a short battle with cancer. John was born in 1950 in New York City, the son of John and Phyllis LoCascio. He grew up in the Bronx and attended Fordham Preparatory School in New York City before graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1972. He earned his M.D. from State University of New York Downstate in 1977 and completed his residency in Springfield, Massachusetts. John was a physician and partner at Mount David Clinical Associates in Lewiston until 1990. He then left his internal medicine practice to work as a medical director in leading global disability insurance companies. The family would like to thank Drs. Tom Reeder and Nancy Heimonen and his employer Mutual of Omaha for their compassion during John's illness. John was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, The American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians, and the Royal Society of Medicine in the United Kingdom. He was also on the executive committee of the American Academy of Insurance Medicine. He had a keen interest in teaching and writing, had numerous publications, and presented regularly at conferences in the US and abroad. John is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Karen; daughter Meghan Ganschow, husband Scott and children Hazel and Sean, of West Burlington, Iowa; daughter Caitlin LoCascio-King, husband Jason and children Abram, Darius, Gabriel and Junia, of Scarborough; daughter Shannon LoCascio of Scarborough; sisters Donna Hellriegel and Joan Meaney and their families, all of New Jersey; and his faithful bichon sidekick, Kebo. His last days were also brightened by dear friends David and Donna Walter of Bangor, Maine, to whom the family is forever grateful. John, also known as J Lo, was a hockey enthusiast and occasional penalty box judge for the Portland Pirates, cooking aficionado, fantasy league trouble maker, car maintenance guru, music lover, and reader of endlessly long history books. He enjoyed his second home in Caterham, England, and was able to travel all over Europe. He was also known for his trademark collared shirts, sweater vests and baseball hats. He was a proud father of his talented daughters and an equally proud Pops who loved Skyping with his grandchildren in Iowa and was a constant figure on the sidelines of his grandchildren's sporting events in Scarborough. Visiting hours celebrating John's life will be held from 4:00 - 8:00p.m. on Wednesday, August 23, at the Conroy Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. 2. Dear Mrs LoCascio and girls,
Please know how incredibly heartbroken I am for your loss. Dr LoCascio was the best boss and mentor I’ve ever had. He gave me the push I needed to be the person I am today. He truly adored his family and no matter when we talked, there wasn’t a time he didn’t share a full rundown of the family including the newest grandchildren. He loved you all so very much, but you know that.
I will keep you all in my heart and prayers. I know he’s with the angels cooking something delicious.
With my whole heart, Joan Reidy.

  3. My deepest sympathies to Karen and family. I only knew John for a short time as I just started at Mutual in May. However, he was a valued mentor to the “new guy” and in a short time taught me a great deal about out mutual business. Sitting at dinner with John, Tom, and Shelly was a wonderful experience as I also got to see just how personable and funny he was. A brilliant flame gone out far too soon. I will miss you! Rest in peace my friend. All my best to Karen and family!

  5. My sincerest condolences to Karen, Meghan, Caitlin, Shannon and families.
I remember John when both our families lived in England in the early 1990s. John, Karen and girls visited us from time to time, and we shared stories of the challenges of living in a “foreign” culture, particularly around laundry. I especially remember that Meghan was in Girl Guides with 2nd Dorking with my daughter, Penelope. They were all a close family.
We bought their Toyota Corolla when we came back from the UK before them, which went on to serve our family well for several years.

    Our best wishes,
