Dr. Donna Jean Carr

PORTLAND - Dr. Donna Jean Carr of Portland, Maine, age 63, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 in Portland, Maine. Donna was born on October 6, 1948, in Newton Mass, daughter of Ernest W. Gonyer and Eunice (Kimball) Gonyer Pollard. Dr. Carr was a 1979 graduate of Smith College and a 1986 graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following her residency at UMass Medical Center in Worcester MA, Dr. Carr specialized in family medicine and obstetrics from 1989 until her death. During her professional career she worked at Downeast Women's Health and Mercy Primary Care in Portland and in an underserved area in rural Pennsylvania. Dr. Carr was a clinical instructor at the Family Practice Residency clinic for Maine Medical Center, and volunteered as a physician at the Portland Free Clinic. Donna loved the practice of medicine, and was an astute clinician and caring doctor. Donna's commitment to public service included serving on the Portland City Council, District 3 from 2004 to 2007. Donna was predeceased by her father Ernest. She is survived by her mother, Eunice Pollard of Largo FL; husband, Captain John A. Cannon of the Portland Fire Department; her children Heddy Carr and Jonathan Carr, both of Washington, DC; her sister Pamela Gonyer of Greenfield MA; her twin sister Diane Esser and her husband Wilson Roberts of Greenfield MA; her brother Bradford W. Gonyer and his wife Jacqueline of Taunton MA; as well as numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Donna's family wishes to thank the staff of the Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical Center and Hospice of Southern Maine. Visiting hours will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, October 28th and on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until Noon at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. A memorial celebration will follow from Noon until 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Birth Roots, 101 State Street, Portland, ME 04101-3720.
