Dorothy Ann Toomey

Dorothy A. Toomey Dorothy (Dottie) A. Toomey passed away peacefully on June 6th at the age of 92 as a resident of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield, VA, Dottie was born in 1929 in Portland, Maine to John F. Toomey, Sr. and Sadie E. (McDonough) Toomey. Dottie grew up in Portland, graduating from South Portland High. In 1952, she joined the accounting department of New England Telephone Company. She rose through the ranks and became the first woman manager of the business services center in Maine in 1971. This was the first of several glass ceilings she broke for the company of which she was extremely proud. She would continue her career with New England Telephone, eventually retiring as a manager in the legal department with AT&T in Washington, DC in 1984. After retirement, Dottie filled her days with extensive volunteer work at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. She loved giving comfort to patients and family members to lighten the burden during their stay. This was Dottie, helping others before ever thinking of helping herself. Dottie loved sports and was a stellar athlete in basketball and field hockey. She loved the Boston Red Sox, especially when she was able to watch it with her dad. She carried the love of sports throughout her life. When visiting or talking with her, it was not uncommon to hear a game on the TV in the background. Dottie was also an avid gardener, filling her yard in Kings Park, VA with beautiful rhododendrons and lilies. Dottie was one of five children and is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, John Jr. of Portland, ME; Edward E. of Biddeford, ME; and Robert L. of Prescott, AZ. She is survived by her sister Patricia (Molloy) Skora of Springfield, VA. Also surviving Dottie are 15 nieces and nephews along with many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, all of whom loved and adored her. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral home 172 State Street, Portland. A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland in the St. Catherine section on Friday June 17th at 11:00 am. A memorial service will be held at the Greenspring Chapel 7420 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA 22150 on Saturday, June 25th at 3:00 pm.
