SOUTH PORTLAND - Dorothea A. Millington, 79, of South Portland, passed on October 12, 2012, with family members by her side. Dorothea was born in Portland April 13, 1933, the daughter of Patrick and Gertrude Flaherty Feeney. She attended Cathedral School and St. Joseph's Academy in Portland and graduated from Jesu High School in Miami, Florida. Dot was a true Mainer loving everything about this state. She was a spiritual person and taught religion classes and sang with the Saint Rose of Lima choir in Northboro Mass. She was an anonymous writer for a local newspaper for many years under the pseudonym of "Casper" covering local issues. Dot campaigned for the Democratic Party including Ted Kennedy. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in South Portland. Dot would describe herself as "A devote Catholic, Irish Democrat, and in that order". Her children saw her as an amazing, faithful, compassionate and loving mother. Her family was the foundation of her life. She took extra care of friends and neighbors and was non-judgmental and caring for everyone she came in contact with. At 16, she met the love of her life, Richard J. Millington. Four years later they were married on June 13, 1953, at St. Patrick's Church. They enjoyed 53 years together. They began their family and lived in Massachusetts returning to Maine in 1972. Dot and Dick enjoyed creating many years of memories. Going to the beach, annual trips to Peaks Island, and numerous family gatherings. "Mim's", as the grandkids called her, loved having her "chickies" visit her and treating them to special meals, green handshakes and warm loving hugs and kisses. Christmas was always a joyous occasion with the grandchildren enjoying their BIG brown bags of gifts. Dot loved the outdoors, gardening, long walks on the beach, reading and writing. She absolutely loved being a wife and mother. Dot was a homemaker for many years. Once her children were raised she worked as the Executive Secretary for the South Portland City Manager and retired from there. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. To the Millington family – I am saddened to read of the passing of Dot. I have so many fond memories of sitting at the dining room table on Sunday afternoons, having a beer or six, playing cards or just chatting the day away. Dick sitting in the living room watching football; Dot in the kitchen whipping up enough food to feed whoever was around when it was time for dinner; various kids and their friends in and out throughout the day. That house was filled with love and laughter and all were welcome. My heart goes out to all of you. May you find comfort in your memories in the coming days and know that Dot has moved on to join your father and they are smiling upon all of you. Pam

Mom would say God Bless You! and tell you to drive safe, of course! (..and we all ‘second her emotion!) My affectionate thanks from me and Debbie, Pat, Chris, Dottie and Marytracey ~

  6. I was saddened to hear of Mrs. Millington’s passing. Some of my favorite childhood memories are from the short time I lived next door to the Millingtons on Simenton St. And to think all of those great memories happened before I turned 6!!! I loved the entire family, however Mrs. Millington has always been one of my all time favorite people. It has been about 7 years since I last saw her, but I have thought of her (and the whole family) often throughout the years. She used to call me her little Magpie because I was quite a talker, but she always made time to listen to me. Mrs. Millington will always hold a special place in my heart. xoxo
