Portland - Doris M. Murphy, 82, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018 at her daughters home surrounded by her family. Born in Houlton, Maine on July 5, 1936, Doris was the daughter of the late Bernard and Marion (Davis) Hughson. Throughout her life, her primary focus was raising and caring for her seven children. Though she instilled many great qualities in her children, having a strong faith was the foundation of her teachings. She was a long-time communicant of St. Dominic's Church where she served in the PTA and Mothers Club while her kids were in school. Always aspiring to set a good example for her children, Doris went back to school at the age of 51 to attain her LPN degree. She worked at Mere Point Nursing Center for 15 years, retiring in 2005. Following her retirement, Doris volunteered at the Barron Center in the Alzheimer's Unit for 10 years. One of the defining characteristics of Doris Murphy was the desire to always help and care for others. She would always put others before herself, offering love, care and support to those around her, and was the "go to" person when anyone needed help. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Marie Humphrey and husband Joseph of Florida, Diane Fuller and husband Joseph of Gray, Tresa Murphy of New Jersey, Shawna Schoonover and husband Chris of Oklahoma; sons, Bernard Murphy and wife Denise of Westbrook, Joseph Murphy of Farmington and Michael Murphy of Portland. She was the loving grandmother and best friend to 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Visiting Hours celebrating Doris' remarkable life will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8 from 3-6PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 9 at 11AM at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland. I worked with this incredible woman for 12 yrs at Mere Point watching her daily do what she did best which was caring for people…and not just the residents but her co-workers as well..she was a mother to us all and I loved to watch her get steamed up about something she felt passionate about which usually had something to do with the care of her residents..she was such a wonderful caring and loving person..the world was definitely a better place with her in it..I am sure that she will be one of the brightest stars shining down on all of us for the rest of our lives…Godspeed on your new journey my friend..I am sure the gates of heaven will welcome you with open arms..I will miss you my friend…”God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change and wisdom to know the difference”
