Doris (Smith) Holmes, 82, of Acton, ME and formerly of Burlington, MA, passed away peacefully after a long battle with Parkinson disease on Thursday July 18, 2013 at the Greenwood Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Sanford. She was born in Somerville, MA on March 2, 1931 a daughter of the late Ralph and Audrey (Snare) Smith.In her younger years Doris loved to bowl and was also an avid skater. She enjoyed all types of outdoor activities with her family such as snowmobiling, swimming, waterskiing, fishing and lobstering. She was also an avid Red Sox fan.She and her husband were married in 1953 and lived in Burlington, MA for 50 years where they raised their three children. She worked at Almy's Department Store for many years before starting at Sears and then onto medical records at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.For many years she was an active member of the Church of Christ in Burlington and then the Acton Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Acton. She was also a member of the Women's Fellowship. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Peter Holmes Jr., of Acton, ME, and formerly of Burlington, MA, her three children, Matthew Holmes and his wife, Debra of Milford, MA, Deborah Noonan and her husband, Daniel of Wilmington, MA, and Donna Holmes of Acton, ME. She is also survived by two grandchildren and one great grandchild, sister and brother in law, Barbara and Charles Parker of Agawum, MA and many nieces and nephews.A celebration of Doris's life will be held on Saturday July 27 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the Acton Congregational Church in Acton.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations in her memory to the Michael J.
