South Portland - Donald Lewis Guerette, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco. He was born in Portland on August 2, 1935, to the late Raney and Alice (Hill) Guerette.
Portland was home to Don, where he spent his early years on Danforth Street with his parents and sisters, Sylvia and Linda. He married the love of his life, Eleanor Frances Marcoux on May 12, 1956. Don and Eleanor enjoyed 66 wonderful years together until her death in 2022. They raised their five children in Portland, until moving to South Portland, where they lived for 53 years.
Don graduated from Portland High School in 1953. He went on to have a very successful career at Nelson & Small. He quickly rose to Parts Manager until he retired at the age of 71, after 52 years of service. During his career he won several awards allowing him and Eleanor to travel the world including Switzerland, Ireland, Italy, and Hawaii.
Don had many hobbies including bowling, golfing, horse racing, working in the yard, dining at Ken’s Place, and coaching Portland and So. Portland Little League baseball and All-Star teams for over 15 years. He had fond memories of the talented players he coached. He also spent years of enjoyment supporting his grandchildren in all their activities. Don had a strong Catholic faith and was an active communicant of St. Dominic’s in Portland and St. John’s in South Portland.
Don was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor Guerette, and sister, Sylvia Cloutier. He is survived by his five children, daughter, Deborah Perreault and husband, Lou of South Portland; sons, Stephen and wife, Donna of Scarborough, Dana and wife, Laurie of Scarborough, Joseph and wife, Susan of Cape Elizabeth and Timothy and spouse, Kerry Moran of Georgetown, MA; grandchildren, Karissa and husband Steve Acciardo, Darren, Marc, Kellie, Courtney, Justin, Samantha; great-grandchildren, Capri and Luca Acciardo; sister, Linda Kilbride and husband Fred; nieces, Maureen and Allison; nephews, Kevin and Jack; brothers-in-law, Frank Marcoux and wife Marce and Robert Marcoux and wife Vitaline; and many other extended family members.
Don was one of the oldest living hemophiliacs in New England; the family wishes to give special thanks to Glen and his team at the Maine Hemophilia Center, and other caregivers, especially Brandi from Maine Health Care at Home, Maine Medical Center, Seal Rock Healthcare and Hospice of Southern Maine.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 pm on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, September 30, 2024, at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
