Resided in: Alfred, Maine
Donald A. Gagnon, 86, of Alfred, Maine, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Born in Biddeford on June 22, 1939, the son of Alfred and Rose Gagnon. He graduated from St. Louis High School in Biddeford in 1958 and proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962. During his time in the service, Don held the rank of SP4 E4 (T) and was stationed in Germany in a medical unit during the tense period surrounding the construction of the Berlin Wall. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in recognition of his honorable service.
On September 2, 1963, Don married the love of his life, Carol M. Cote of Sanford. Together, they shared over four decades of love, laughter, and family until her passing on July 11, 2005.
Don worked for 40 years as a dedicated machinist at Saco Defense (General Dynamics), where his incredible work ethic left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was a proud 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, where he also served as a past Grand Knight. His strong faith was evident through his involvement in his parish—serving as a lector at St. Andre’s Church in Biddeford and singing with the choir group at Holy Family Church.
Beyond his professional and spiritual commitments, Don was a man who embraced life fully. He loved dancing—especially square dancing—playing horseshoes, and hosting family cookouts. His warm smile, sharp wit, and generous heart made him a joy to be around.
In his later years, Don found companionship and joy with his long-time partner and best friend, Barbara Pearson of Alfred, whom he loved dearly.
He leaves behind a loving family who brought him great pride and joy:
Son Shawn Gagnon of Buxton and his wife Stacey, and their three daughters: Shaylyn (Gagnon) Milne, Alexandra Chauloult, and Victoria Preman.
grandchildren, Ian Camire of Maine and Skylar Sendtko of Florida, his daughter Donna (Gagnon) Ballard and her husband Samuel of South Carolina, and his son Brian Gagnon and family of North Carolina.
Don’s legacy of hard work, deep faith, and unwavering love for his family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be missed dearly but remembered with warmth and gratitude.
