Scarborough- Diane Elizabeth (Gagné) Steele, 90, passed away on January 29, 2026, in the loving presence of her daughters.

She was born on August 24, 1935, to Robert and Doris (Valente) Gagné. Diane was raised in Portland, Maine and attended private Catholic schools, graduating from Saint Joseph’s Academy in 1953. It was during her years at Saint Joseph’s Academy that she formed life-long friendships.

After graduating from Northeastern Business School, Diane enjoyed a successful career with Canadian Pacific Railways where she remained until the birth of her first child.

Diane was happiest in her home at Higgins Beach where she resided until her death. She loved the Higgins Beach community and cherished the many close friends she had there.

She was creative in many ways. She enjoyed sewing costumes for her children, decorating the family’s ski home, and creating winning floats for the Higgins Beach 4th of July parade each year for her children and then her grandchildren.

Diane is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Steele Skillings and her husband, James, and Kimberly Steele Sproull and her husband, Bill. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jamie Sproull and Andrew Skillings. She was predeceased by her parents and her former husband, Paul Steele.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their gentle and compassionate care.

Diane’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday, February 6, 2026, at St. Maximilian Kolbe, 150 Black Point Rd, Scarborough. Immediately following Mass there will be a reception at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.

A private family burial will be in the spring.

Arrangements are under the direction of Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
