David Joseph Conley

February 12, 1966 ~ December 28, 2023
Resided in:
Portland, Maine
David Joseph Conley, 57, of Portland, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on December 28th, 2023.
He was born in Portland on February 12th, 1966, the son of Gerard Paul and Ann Nora (Duff) Conley, Sr. He attended St. Dominic’s Grammar School (prior to its closure), Cathedral Grammar School, and, after a brief stint with the Jesuits at Cheverus, he proudly obtained a Portland High Diploma (PHD) in 1984.
David ended his teenage years with a stroke of luck when he hit a Maine lottery scratch ticket for $10,000. He spread that good fortune amongst his family, his friends, and even strangers. Though David never became a man of wealth, whatever he had in life he shared with those who had less. His generous nature became his trademark and endeared him to all who knew him.
David worked for the now-defunct Portland Savings Bank in his youth, but he did not care for the suits and ties, shedding them for the clothes of a house painter in the employ of Steve Hilton and his painting company. David and his beloved dog, Clovis, hosted many post-work gatherings for his fellow painters and friends at his apartment on Deering St., conveniently located next to his grandfather's local, the Andrews Post, Portland's best American legion hall. David wore his West End sweatshirt with a smile.
David was a notorious homebody, but he reveled in his one-time trips to Vegas and California. His favorite trip of all, though, was his trek across the pond with his father and huge family to Ireland in 2002. He claimed to have seen a leprechaun, but never found that pot of gold.
David lived his life in exactly the way he chose to live it, by his definition, to its fullest. He loved his family and his friends. His only regret will be not hitting that lottery for one more bundle of dough, which he would have happily left to his siblings, nieces and nephews.
David was pre-deceased by his parents, a sister, Mary Catherine, and a brother, John. He is survived by his sisters Jean M. Greenwood and her husband, Richard of Portland, and Ann Nora Murphy, as well as his brothers, Gerard P., Jr., and his wife Mary of Portland, Richard P. and his wife Kathy of Bronx, New York, Thomas M. and his wife Jayne of South Portland, Peter H., Patrick G., and Daniel E., Kevin D., and Donald J., all of Portland, and many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 20th, at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home in Portland. To view share an online condolence with David's family, please visit www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s honor to Preble Street at preblestreet.org.
