Br. Daniel J. Caron, 82, died on Friday, April 3, 2026 at the Brothers’ community on Shaker Hill in Alfred.
Br. Daniel was born on October 25, 1943, in St. Benjamin, Quebec, Canada, the seventh child of Benjamin Caron and Catherine Boulet. After his mother’s passing, at the age of six, Daniel was adopted by his uncle and aunt, Gerard and Cecile (Lessard) Boulet, and raised with their family in Waterville, Maine.
Daniel was a student of the Brothers at Saint Francis de Sales School in Waterville, and in 1957 asked to attend the Brothers Alfred Juniorate for his high school education. On August 22, 1961, at the age of 18, Daniel was one of nine postulants invested with the religious habit of the Brothers of Christian Instruction. His novitiate year (1961–1962), under the tutelage of Brother David Touchette, was followed by studies at Walsh College in Canton, Ohio, majoring in education and comprehensive science. Graduate work furthered his preparation for teaching biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
His teaching career began in 1965 in Fall River, Massachusetts, where he also served as an athletic director. In 1979, he was assigned to Mount Assumption High School in Plattsburgh, New York, to serve as principal. For 12 years in administration in the area, Brother Daniel calmly devoted himself to the many tasks of a true team leader, consistently supporting his staff, students, and their parents with patience, scholarship, and dedication.
In 1992, he returned to Fall River to resume, with pleasure, his role as a well-respected, competent, and successful chemistry teacher. Then, in May of 2000, he was appointed Superior to the Provincial of the Brothers’ U.S. Notre Dame Province, headquartered in Alfred. Brother Daniel held this position for nine years with great skill, demonstrating deep knowledge of the issues surrounding religious life and the challenges facing the Church. During these years, he maintained a part-time staff position at Bishop Connolly High School (Massachusetts), enabling him to return full-time to teaching in 2009.
In 2012, he was assigned to Notre Dame to serve in his present office, and he also served as province treasurer. He continued to be a quiet and determined inspiration—one who truly cared for others.
Br. Daniel is survived by his Brothers in the community in Alfred; his brother, George (Therese) Caron of St. George, Quebec; and his sister-in-law, Lucille Boulet of Benton, Maine. He was predeceased by his siblings Bertrand, Pauline, Pierrette, Dorothee, and Christine Caron, all of Canada, as well as by his adoptive siblings Charlotte, Norman, and John Boulet of Waterville, Maine.
Br. Daniel is also survived by many nephews, nieces, and cousins in both Canada and the United States.
Prayers for the deceased with the Brothers will be held at the chapel on Wednesday, April 29th at 4:45 PM. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 30th at the Notre Dame Chapel of the Brothers of Christian Instruction located at 125 Shaker Hill Road in Alfred. Interment will follow at the Brother’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to the Brothers of Christian Instruction Retirement Fund P.O Box 159 Alfred, Maine 04002.
