Scarborough- Coin P. Hauk, 79, of Scarborough, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Gosnell Hospice House following a battle with cancer. Coin was born in Michigan in 1938, the son of the late Ira and Nora (Gordon) Hauk. He earned his Bachelors Degree from Michigan State University in 1963. He then served in the United States Army, Military Police, in Pirmasens, Germany, where he met his wife. On November 26, 1960, while stationed in Germany, he married Helga M. Pfersdorff, the daughter of Erich Pfersdorff, Mayor of Donsieders/ Pfalz, Germany. After leaving Germany, Coin and Helga moved back to the United States, where he began his career with the U.S. Secret Service, assigned to Jacqueline B. and her two beautiful children Caroline, and John-John Kennedys security after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, winters in Palm Beach, Florida and summers in Hyannis Port, MA. He then transferred to Washington, D.C. where he was assigned to the detail for President Lyndon B. Johnson for four years, during that time he traveled around the world three times for various details. Agents used Willie Nelsons On the Road Again as their traveling song. He then relocated to the Milwaukee, WI field office, working details for Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan, as well as many foreign dignitaries such as Pope John Paul, Indira Ghandi, Moshe Dayan and Fidel Castro. In 1976, Helga and Coin were transferred to Maine, where he was the resident agent in charge, and was instrumental in establishing the Secret Service security detail in 1981, at Walkers Point in Kennebunk, for then Vice President George H.W. Bush, he remained at Walkers Point until his retirement in 1983. His family commented that, Coin was very dedicated to his job, always behind the scenes, never wanting to draw attention to himself or his family. Unable to remain idle, Coin, then had a ten year career as Chief of Police for the University of Southern Maine. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family at the Hauk Hill Farm, in Limington, this was his escape place, and loved he being there enjoying his children and spending time alone with them in the outdoors. Helga, Rebecca, and Dan,I am so so sorry for your loss. Coin was a truly one of a kind, a gentleman who never hesitated to teach a young cop through his humor and knowledge. I truly consider myself fortunate to say I knew him and worked with him. I am also sorry for the delay in this message, but I just learned of his passing just today.

Coin was a colleague with whom I was privileged to serve in the 1980’s. We became fast friends and I came to know him as a consummate professional. We lost contact over the years due to the distance between our States of residence but that did not and will not diminish my respect for Coin. I pray that his family will know that there of those of us who share their grief.
