Clayson Lee Harris
November 15, 1933 ~ August 30, 2017
Portland-Clayson L. Harris, 83, formerly of Pine Street, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at the Gosnell Hospice House following a courageous battle with cancer.
Clayson was born Nov 15, 1933, in Portland, the son of the late Clayson L. and Virginia Lee Harris. He attended St. Dominic's Elementary School and Cheverus High School.
Clayson had a number of different jobs during his working life including a period of time which he owned and operated Harry's Bar in Portland. Most notably, he took pride in, and really enjoyed, his twenty plus years as a security guard at Mercy Hospital. After retiring from his security guard position, he lived in Windham before moving back to Portland. For the last three and a half years, he lived at the Inn at Village Square in Gorham- an Assisted Living Facility. Without question, he really enjoyed his time in Gorham and considered the staff members as "his adopted family".
Clayson was a friendly person and had a good sense of humor. He loved fishing and took a great deal of pride in his garden; especially his tomatoes.
Clayson was predeceased by his wife Agnes Marie Harris; younger brother, John "Jack" Clayson. He is survived by a step daughter, Nidena Whitehouse of Freeport; two grandchildren Jodi Brooks and Michael Whitehouse both of Freeport; four great grandchildren, Nicholas Brooks, Ryan, Joseph, and Michael Whitehouse; two sisters, Judy Libby of Scarborough and Arlene and her husband August Oliveira of Wells; nieces, Barbara Jipson, Bonney Libby Morgan and Laura Oliveira Stubbs.
Visiting hours and a celebration of Clayson's life will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
