Charles D. Schwindt

Charles D. (Chuck) Schwindt, 83, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021 in Falmouth, Maine. He was born July 23, 1938 in Coshocton, Ohio to Dr. Howard & Hazel (Russell) Schwindt. Chuck went to Ohio State University as an undergraduate and graduated from medical school there in 1964. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. While in medical school, he met Deanna Jeffers on a blind date and they married in 1963. Chuck was a captain in the Air Force from 1964-1968 and was stationed in California, Ohio and Tripoli, Libya (where his twin daughters were born). After finishing up in the military, he did his orthopedic residency in Madison, Wisconsin from 1968-1972 before he and his family moved to Marquette, Michigan where he practiced medicine for 26 years in Marquette, L'Anse, Newberry and Ishpeming. Chuck spent his retirement splitting his time between Marquette, his camp at Cliff Lake and Marco Island, Florida. After being diagnosed with Parkinson's, he spent his final years in Falmouth, Maine near his daughter Laura and her family. Chuck was a stubborn German who liked to be in control. He was also a devoted caregiver to his wife during her battle with cancer, someone who loved to tell a good story, a conscientious surgeon, and often generous to a fault. When he wasn't in the operating room, he was in the woods or on the water. He had many interests throughout his life including hunting, fishing, gun, wine and coin collecting, golfing, the stock market, flying planes, swimming, skiing, scuba diving, biking and traveling. He was predeceased by Deanna, his wife of 38 years in 2001, his siblings Jane Craigo, Max Schwindt and Dorothy Davis; his parents and two nephews. He is survived by three daughters; Laura (Mike Baumann) Schwindt of Falmouth, Maine, Lisa (Roger) McCormack of Clarkston, Michigan, Heidi (Mark Lipski) Schwindt of Los Angeles, California; grandchildren Jake and Sarah Baumann, Nick and Kaila McCormack, and Isabel Lipski; a brother-in-law Phil (Kelsey) Jeffers, and many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful to the Legacy Memory Care staff in Falmouth, Maine for their excellent, compassionate care and to his wonderful caregiver of the last few years, Carolyn Ewald. A private burial in Marquette will be held at a later date in Park Cemetery. Gifts in his memory may be made to The National Audubon Society or the Parkinson's Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Homes. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.

  1. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to spend time with your father. He spoke fondly of his family and loved you all dearly. I will miss my friend

  2. Dear Laura , Lisa, and Heidi….Al and I are so very sorry to hear of your loss. Yesterday I kayaked by their home and thought about what a wonderful friend your mom was to me. The family burial plot is close to my mom’s so I visit her often. Love to all, Mary

    – Mary Hunter

  3. Bud and Marilyn Hart (nurse anesthetist and OR RN) worked with Chuck for many years in Marquette where he was always (even at 0300 on call) tuned in to the needs of his patients and the OR staff. So many times we would cross paths at Bonanza seeing Danny and Chuck who would always have us sit with them for a moment or two and share a good story. God’s blessings to all his family. Bud and Marilyn

    – Bud Hart

  5. I have many fond memories of my brother-in-law, Chuck. He probably played a large role in me also becoming an Orthopaedic surgeon. I well remember us sitting in his Sauna at Lake Hill followed by a cold, naked swim to a raft in the middle of the lake as his initiation to see if I fit into his Michigan “bravado!” I think I did well for a “Buckeye!” He and my sister loved everything about the Upper Peninsula, and were a perfect match for each other. Phil

    – Phillip D. Jeffers MD

  6. I worked for Dr. Schwindt for many years as his PA at Marquette General Hospital. I always was at ease working with him and despite him being a “stubborn German” I never had any problems working with him. He was a hard worker and always stood up for the little guy. He will be missed. My prayers and sympathies are with the family. Brian Weatherdon PA-C

  7. Dear Laura, Lisa and Heidi and your families, I was saddened to hear of your Dad’s passing. We did lose touch after he retired, but I have so many wonderful memories of him. We met at St Lukes Hospital, (Marquette General Hospital) in 1972, when I was a young 18 year old unit clerk. I was the clerk in the Emergency Department and then on the Ortho unit. Your Dad, Dr Rumney, Dr Don and Dr Neuman all felt it was their duty to give me marital advice when my wedding was coming up. They always had a twinkle in their eye and a wink at the end of the advice. Your Dad was gracious to allow me to follow him in the office and OR when I was a nursing student and made a point of telling me congratulations both times, when I graduated from LPN and RN training. My husband and I have been married for 45 years and we still use the Crock pot that he and your Mom gave us as a wedding gift. I think they would all be proud of our numbers. A few years ago, one of the RN’s I was working with in the ED, showed me her pictures of their Florida dive trip (I was envious as, I am terrified under the water) as I was looking at the pictures, I told Jill, “gosh that guy looks so familiar to me, he is a ringer for one of my ortho doc’s from way back in the day – Dr Schwindt”. She laughed and said to me” Do you know everyone? That is Chuck Schwindt, we went diving with him at Marco.” I was so happy to see him and know he was doing things in retirement that all should do…enjoy our life. Please know I hold you all in my prayers and thank my lucky stars that I was able to know your dad and he was a wonderful man. Best Gayla St Onge RN(retired) Marquette, MI
