South Portland - Chandra Emily Lowe was born in Anchorage, Alaska, on December 11, 1983, the daughter of Paul Lowe and Peggy Nekvinda Lowe. Her family moved from Alaska to New Jersey when Chandra was not yet two years old. She attended and graduated from Gill St Bernard's School in 2002 and from Catawba College in 2006 with a BA in English. Chandra moved to Maine after college, expecting to stay a few years and then move on to another exotic locale, but loved Maine so much that she stayed for the rest of her life. In her job with Stenhouse Publishers, she traveled to many other locations but was always happiest coming home to Maine.
Chandra loved this life she was given, and was very aware of God's purpose for her: to share Jesus with other people. Her sense of humor, her quick and clever wit and sarcasm, and her way with words were well-known and appreciated by all who knew her. Chandra was a writer of poetry and prose, a blogger who mined the mysteries of God and daily life, a lover and follower of Jesus, a singer and a lover of music, a lover of live theater and movies, a dear friend to many, many friends, a loving daughter, a sweet sister, a caring and loving aunt to Johnny and Dakota, and a caring and loving godmother to Ruby, Max, Ben, and Sam Cook and Will Boncoddo.
When her brain tumor was discovered in 2015, Chandra fought hard to live her life, and to allow God to still use her in the lives of others. So many friends have remarked how their lives were touched and forever changed, by knowing Chandra.
Chandra left this earth for Heaven with Jesus before the dawn on October 16, 2019 at the age of 35 years, 10 months and 5 days. In addition to many, many friends, Chandra leaves to cherish her memory, her mother, Peggy Lowe; her brother, Matthew Lowe and his wife Karen and their sons Johnny and Dakota; the closer-than-family, Owen Family--Tim, Julie, Hope, Hayden, Hailee, Hunter and Hylah; aunts and uncles, Bill & Terri Nekvinda, Rocky & Nancy Zahn, Joe & Lynn Nekvinda, Jayne & Andy Lowe, Jim & Laurie Lowe; stepmother, Joan Murray; cousins, Andy, Kim and Reagan Zahn; Gabe, Jo, Livi, and Becca Zahn; Kyle,
Jody, Jacob and Vince Nekvinda; Kelly and Sarah Nekvinda; Kevin, Jenna, Aubrey and Bella Nekvinda; Jenny, Allen, Ruby, Max, Ben and Sam Cook; Toby Lowe; Sarah Avery Lowe; and Chris Lowe and Julia Yarwood. Chandra was predeceased by her father Paul C. Lowe; her grandparents, Paul F and Florence Ellen Lowe, Vince and Virginia Nekvinda; an uncle, Mike Nekvinda; and a cousin Ian Ross Lowe.
The family thanks Chandra's many friends for meals provided, cheerful visits and calls from family, friends, and her outstanding Rock Church Family. A special thank you to Dr. Christine Lu-Emerson and her staff for more than four years of love and care. Thanks also to Hospice of Southern Maine for their gentle, tender care of Chandra and her family. Chandra is a member of The Rock Church in Scarborough, Maine, and, among other tasks, served as a greeter at the doors, welcoming folks to services with her big smile and friendly face.
A Celebration of Chandra's life will be held at 3:00PM on Saturday, October 26, 2019, at The Rock Church, 66 Gorham Road, Scarborough. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home in South Portland.
Instead of flowers, Chandra has asked that memorials be directed to, The Rock Church building fund, 66 Gorham Road, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
Chandra was a huge influence in our son Joshua’ s youth group experience…she was a friend and collaborator in many quirky schemes! She was also right by our sides when he had his pre-cancerous lung tumor removed. Such dedication and love for her Jesus led her to change many hearts for Him! This May, Joshua graduated from the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity. We will always be grateful for Chandra’ s presence in our lives.

Peggy and the rest of Chandra’s loved ones, please know how very sorry we are for your tremendous loss. My daughter Emily Cook loved Chandra as a best friend forever. Chandra was a bridesmaid at her wedding and we fell in love with all the wonderfulness that was Chandra. Her intelligence and sense of humor, her kindness, and her ability to make our family feel as if we had always known her!! I remember well the last time I saw her when she came to meet Emily’s daughter Fiona. Chandra was pure fun!! We prayed along with so many others that God would leave her here with us, however, He chose a different path for her. Our hearts are broken, but not hopeless, as we WILL see her again when our time to go home comes. I just know she will be one of the greeters when I arrive. Our love to you, and as you walk through this valley, know we are praying for you all. The Prochaska family

I feel so very blessed to have had you in my life – and when my turn comes to join you – I expect you to be you the first one in line on God’s Welcome Team to greet me.

There are rare and powerful “touchstones” of people we encounter in life, and Chandra was one of them. Vital (full of life), deeply hydrated with passion for so many of life’s elements, with a stunning intellect and an easy friendship, Chandra was this beautiful, compelling light that drew so many of us. Who could have this great magic, we wondered? Who could be this nice, this forgiving, this “with it?” We just wanted to be present with her, to vibrate on her frequency. For me, and so many writers/educators at Stenhouse, we just wanted to conduct ourselves in such a way as to be worthy of her collegiality: She affected us that much, we respected the individual she was that much. We were all elevated after conversations with her, better people than we were in the moments prior to engaging with her. Her writing was eloquent, personal, accessible, and so spiritually cogent. “Gobsmacking” is the word that comes to mind right now as I think about all she did, all she was, and the strong legacy of love, professionalism, and genuine good humor for life she shared with us. It was an honor to stand in the glow of her bright comet as it rocketed across our earth — and now, on to a different plane. I see her knowing smile and hear her great laugh in this moment, and I am comforted and grateful. And there she is just now, pulling out another book to recommend, another author to encourage, another hope to leave this world. Thank you, Chandra, thank you!
