Carlton S. (Beanie ) Sawyer of Brooksville, FL., a longtime resident of Sanford - Springvale, Maine, passed away at HPH Hospice in Brooksville, FL on July 1, 2012 following a brief illness.He was born in Sanford on June 27, 1929 the son of Paul S. and Agnes Edna Sawyer. He was a graduate of Sanford High School and attended Nasson College. He was a veteran of the US Navy and the US Marine Corps.Carlton was a certified welder, working for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He worked as a foreman at Hussey Manufacturing in North Berwick, and he had his own welding business in Springvale for many years.He served many years with the Springvale Call Fire Department.At 16 years of age he became the youngest person in Maine to become a licensed pilot, a feat of which he was very proud.In the late 1990's into the early 2000's he served on the Sanford Airport Advisory Committee and served as its Chairman for several years.Carlton raced hydroplane boats that he fabricated and built at home, acquiring many accolades in that arena.He was predeceased by a sister Louise Mae Sawyer in 1934.He is survived by his wife/partner Joyce R. Sawyer of Brooksville, FL, six children, JoAnn Reinert and her husband Roger of Fleetwood, PA, Cathy Yerger and her husband James of Blandon, PA, John G. Sawyer of Orlando, FL., Craig A. Sawyer and his wife Elaine of Shapleigh, Jay S. Sawyer and his wife Diane of Sanford, Cary J. Sawyer of Sanford, eight grand children Brett and Gordon Lemay, Timothy Yerger, Evan Sawyer, Joshua and Brittany Sawyer, and Garrett and Lauren Sawyer, 3 great grand children, a sister Esther J. Flint of Spring Hill, FL and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted on Wednesday, August 8 at 12:00 noon at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the HPH Hospice, 12260 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, FL 34613.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
