Beverly (Houghton) Wellman 1947-2022 SCARBOROUGH--Beverly (Houghton) Wellman, 74, of Scarborough, died Tuesday, March 1 surrounded by family at her home on Higgins Beach. She was born in Lewiston on May 5, 1947 the daughter of Guy and Mary (Kelleher) Houghton. She grew up in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School, where she played drums in the EL marching band. She married her high school sweetheart Barry Wellman on March 16, 1978 sharing 23 years of marriage before he passed in 2001. Bev built her career in non-profit management, at organizations including the Maine Center for Educational Services, the Maine Women's Fund and the Portland Rotary. For many years, she, Barry and their children also owned and operated the family's convenience store Baer's Place on Higgins Beach. In her spare time, Bev enjoyed antiquing and time with her saw, as she hand crafted wooden jigsaw puzzles. She also loved a good road trip, laughing with friends, and opening day each year at Hodgman's Frozen Custard in New Gloucester. The many pets she had over the years also brought her a great deal of joy. Bev was predeceased by her husband, Barry Wellman; their son, Eric Edgecomb; and her brother, Robert Houghton. She is survived by her daughters: Elizabeth Edgecomb, Heather Wellman, and Eric's wife Chantal; her grandchildren, Wyatt and Seneca Edgecomb; her niece Joannie Stasulis; and many close friends she considered family. A private family graveside service will be held at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, South Portland Chapel.
