Betty Lakeman

Betty Jean Lakeman, 74, of Sanford, died on Monday, October 7, 2013 at the Kennebunk Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Kennebunk.Betty was born in Medway, Maine on December 8, 1938 to Leland and Mildred (York) Lakeman. She grew up in Wells where she attended local schools. She worked for many years at a mill in Newmarket, New Hampshire where she also served as the bookkeeper for the laborers union.Betty loved country music and singing karaoke. She was the recipient of many awards from both the Down East Country Music Association and the Pine Tree State Country Music Association. She was known as "Grandma" around the clubs in Sanford and York County. She will be remembered as a fun and outgoing woman and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Thibeault of Springvale; four sisters, Linda Bodwell and her husband Robert of Alfred, Sharon Hawks and her husband James of Florida, Maryann Garland and her husband Kenny of Florida and Carol Wilson and her husband Robert III of Florida.At Betty's request there will be no formal funeral services.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Maine Country Music Association, 321 Gold Course Road, Newport Maine 04953.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
