Betty Ann Hammond
Betty Ann Hammond, 76, of Waterboro, passed away surrounded by her family at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough on Friday, January 8th 2010. Betty Ann was born in Sanford on August 18, 1933 to Richard L. and Helen Whicher Johnson and attended local schools. She received her high school diploma from Massabesic High School in 1979. On October 28, 1950, Betty Ann married Ansel S. Hammond and together they would raise six sons. In 1960 she, her husband and family moved to Waterboro. They ran the Waterboro Superette from 1960 to 1988 and also dispatched for the Waterboro Fire Department during that time. She and her family were very involved in the Waterboro Fire Department for many years. Betty Ann was also one of the founding members of the Waterboro Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She also owned and operated The Right Stitch Yarn and Fabric Shop in Waterboro for many years. Betty Ann was a long time member of the North Waterboro Community Baptist Church where she enjoyed participating in many church activities. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday school there for many years. Betty Ann was a member of Rehobeth Rebekah Lodge of Waterboro where she served as Chaplain, Vice Grand and Noble Grand. Rehobeth eventually merged with Rehomah and she served as Chaplain there for many years. She served as Warden and Vice President for the Rebekah Assembly of Maine and served as President of the assembly from 1990-1991. She was also the soloist of the assembly for one year and served as District Deputy President. Betty Ann was a devoted mother and grandmother. She served as a Cub Scout leader and loved attending sporting events for her children and grandchildren. Holidays were always a special time for her. During the holiday season she would lovingly bake apple pies for many of her family and friends. Betty Ann was an avid knitter and made hundreds of sweaters and mittens for family and friends. Betty Ann will always be remembered as a kind and loving mother, Nana, Great Nana, and friend who will be dearly missed. Betty Ann was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ansel, and her sister, Louise. Surviving are six sons, Michael Hammond and his companion Pamm Brown of Waterboro/Exeter, Mark R. Hammond and his wife Cheryl of Windham, Larry Hammond and his wife Nancy of Lyman, Gary Hammond and his wife Laurie of Sanford, Peter Hammond and his wife Richelle of East Waterboro and David Hammond and his wife Cindy of Waterboro; 13 grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Melinda of Comstock Park, Michigan, Nicholas of Chicago, Illinois, Nathan and his fiance Lacey Annis of Thornton, Colorado, Zachary and Casey of Lyman, Sara of Sanford, Chelsey and Mariah of East Waterboro and Benjamin, Andrew and Jacob of Waterboro; two great grandchildren, Oryan and Maxwell of Comstock Park, Michigan; a sister, Ruth Miller and her husband Jim of Dover, New Hampshire; a brother-in-law Jim Hammond of Waterboro and a nephew and many nieces. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, January 12th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale. A funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 13th at the North Waterboro Community Baptist Church.
