Bernice L. Plummer
Bernice Littlefield Plummer, our strong family matriarch of 94 years, went to a much deserved rest, with loving family by her side after a very brief illness. Born in Waterboro, Maine, Bernice was the only child of Almon and Lottie (McKenney) Littlefield. During her childhood she lived in Waterboro, Sanford and Hollis. Bernice was as tenacious as a Mama Bear when it came to her family and their well-being. She was a caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, always there with an offer to help. Her friends were the recipients of her generosity and as they became unable to drive, she became their chauffeur, taking them to appointments, shopping and Bingo. She enjoyed family get-togethers and was the "official gravy maker" at the Gile Thanksgiving meal. Bernice loved her two "grand-dogs", Sophie and Cali Binette, and snuck treats to them as often as possible.Bernice was a very independent woman, who worked hard, had a very quick wit and knew how to laugh and have fun. She loved to dance and often told about how, as a young adult, she would walk from Waterboro to Ross Corner to a dance on Saturday night; and later on, up until her knees became too arthritic, she would pick up her friends and take off for to a dance on Saturday night, sometimes after working a full day. She enjoyed Bingo and played at least once a week right up until the past week or two. Going to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun Casinos were another favorite of hers and on her 94th birthday on April 22nd celebrated by going to the Oxford Casino with Donna, Carolyn and Bruce. Bernice enjoyed traveling and her favorite trips were the several she made to Bermuda and Las Vegas. Early on Bernice worked in the Goodall-Sanford Mills. Her real passion was cooking and she was employed as a cook at the Sanford High School cafeteria for several years. After that she was a cook at the H.D. Goodall Hospital and retired after working there for 25 years. Her favorite cooking experience was a summer job the Wishing Well Restaurant in Ogunquit where she had the opportunity to meet actor Art Carney.Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Herman L. Plummer. She is survived by daughters, Donna Plummer Binette of Sanford and Carolyn Plummer Gile and husband, Bruce of Alfred, and daughter-in-law Donita Sanford Plummer. 7 Grandchildren, Brenda Gile of Windham, Julie Gile Canning and husband Colin "Coco" Canning, Jr., of East Waterboro, Glen Gile of Worcester, Mass., Brian Plummer, Barbara Plummer and Tammy Plummer Gordon, all of Sanford.
