Resided in:
Biddeford, Maine
Bernard Tracy, 84, of Biddeford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on August 2, 2024.
Born on October 25, 1939, Bernard was the beloved son of the late Patrick and Catherine Tracy. He grew up in South Portland, where his larger-than-life personality and quick wit earned him the title of class clown at Cheverus High School. Despite his penchant for mischief, Bernard left high school in his sophomore year to proudly serve his country by enlisting in the US Navy.
Upon his return from the Navy, Bernard embarked on a career with Rigby Yard on the railroad as a conductor, a role he dutifully held for 36 years. He settled in Biddeford for over half a century, where his daily routine involved a drive to work at a steady pace, never exceeding 40 MPH, before returning home each night to delight his children with his playful spirit.
As a father, Bernard's love and support were unwavering. He had a unique way of showing his emotions, often shedding tears instead of getting mad at his children. He was their biggest cheerleader, always on their side, ready to back them up no matter what. Known for his loyalty, sincerity, humor, and caring nature, Bernard was a favorite among family and friends, earning the affectionate title of "everyone’s favorite uncle" or "Fat Bernard."
Bernard's passions were as varied as they were endearing. He had a love for reading, and a fondness for gumdrops, peanut butter fudge, and hot peppers. He took on the challenge of learning chess with enthusiasm, despite his self-admitted lack of skill, constantly striving to improve. Music was another of his joys; he loved to play the guitar, always modest about his talent but unafraid to be loud and expressive. Laughter was his constant companion, and he found great joy in sharing it with others. An avid gun enthusiast, Bernard cherished taking his children to the shooting range for target practice, creating lasting memories.
Bernard's family will deeply miss his infectious laughter, cherished weekly phone calls, unwavering encouragement, and his delightful "Bernie-isms."
Bernard was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Catherine Tracy; and brothers, Robert, William, and John Tracy.
He is survived by his children, Roxanne Smyth and husband Shaun of Casco, Robbie Tracy of Old Orchard Beach, Nicole Tracy of Old Orchard Beach, Matrona Reynolds and wife Ashley of China, Seanna Caison and partner Wes Holland of North Carolina, Cory Tracy of Portland; his life partner, Jonah Simpson of Biddeford; brother, Rev. Philip M. Tracy of Portland; sister, Christine Mallory of Scarborough; he was Grampoo to 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM on Monday, August 12 at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland.
