Barbara J. Tully

September 12, 1946 ~ February 7, 2016
South Portland - Barbara J. Tully, 69, of South Portland, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016 at Mercy Hospital after a six year battle with cancer. Born in New Haven, CT, she was the daughter of Vincent A. and Frances (Putnam) Hunihan. She attended Milford, CT schools, was a graduate of Milford High School and was a French language major at the College of New Rochelle in New York. She continued her education focusing on French at Assumption College in Worcester, MA and the Sorbonne in Paris, France. She began her teaching career as an elementary French teacher in Clinton and Orange, CT, followed by Hingham, MA. Upon moving to Maine, Barbara taught Music in Cape Elizabeth Elementary Schools. She was also a substitute French teacher in the South Portland School system. She left teaching to take on the most demanding and challenging job of her life; being a teacher, mentor, confidant and role model for her four children. As the children were growing, Barbara remained very active in their lives. She volunteered in every class; teaching French, music, providing French cooking lessons, being a Brownie Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, booster organization supporter and the list goes on. Her volunteer services also extended to Holy Cross Church where she was longtime communicant involved in countless Christmas fairs and serving as an instructor of religious education. In the mid 80s, Barbara turned her focus to her love of art and art history. She spent 17 years as volunteer docent at Portland Museum of Art. During that time, she served as President of the Docent Council and as Docent Liaison to the PMA board of Trustees. She represented PMA at a National Symposium in Seattle and was the organizer of the PMA National Symposium in Portland where she was so proud to showcase the Portland Museum of Art. During this period, Barbara travelled for two years to Tufts University to take part in the Museum Studies Program. She was extremely delighted to be selected to complete her internship at the PMA. Two years ago, she was honored with the designation of Docent Emeritus. Additionally, this past fall she was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Portland Rotary Club. For several years she was enrolled in Italian language classes at USM and for the past five years participated in a weekly Italian study group. In 2010 Barbara was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two weeks after her last treatment in 2011, Barbara, her daughter Lauren and Barbaras two brothers participated in the St. Vincents Hospital Swim Across Long Island Sound, a 16 mile swim raising money for cancer research and patient support. She also participated twice in the swim portion of the Tri for a Cure. While being treated for cancer herself she enrolled in the Cancer Community Center Buddy program where she helped to support and educate other cancer survivors. Barbara enjoyed being active and remained active up until the past month. She began her day at deep water aerobics and her many interests included snow skiing, boating, swimming, travelling, cooking, playing the piano, gardening and last but not least, playing Scrabble with her close friends on Fridays. She was a member of the Osewantha Garden Club and for several years served as a board member of the Hospital Industries Program at Maine Medical Center. Her greatest joys in life were her children and her eight beloved grandchildren whom she spent countless hours with. Barbara is survived by her husband of 45 years Paul; her four children, Kristen of South Portland, Paul Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Bloomington, IN, Jeffrey and his wife Elizabeth of South Portland, Lauren and her husband Matt Morin of Beverly, MA; her eight grandchildren, Christopher, Cooper, Eileen, Makenna, Anne, Elianna, Michael, and James; brothers, George and his wife Sue of Milford, CT and Vincent formerly of Chicago; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by a host of loving and supportive friends whom she cherished. Barbaras family wishes to thank Dr. Roger Inhorn, Cindy Campbell, RN, and the entire medical and administrative staff of Mercy Fore River and Mercy Hospital, State Street for the kindness, compassion and tender care given to Barbara this past week and throughout her illness. Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday from 4-8PM at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10AM at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Rd., South Portland. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. Dear Tullys. I am sorry to hear of Barbara’s passing. She was such a kind, dear friend to me when my family moved to Clifford Street in South Portland around ’78. We had good times with our young families together in that neighborhood. Barbara was so special and I have such wonderful memories of her. After my family moved we lost touch, but my friendship with Barbara at that time in life sure meant a lot to me. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am very saddened to learn of Barbara’s passing. We were classmates and fellow French majors at New Rochelle, as well as summer roommates in Worcester attending Assumption. She was extremely talented and kind. I remember her soft voice and shining eyes when she spoke of Paul and their future. She even introduced me to Friendly’s hot fudge! Years later, at our tenth reunion, we had such a wonderful conversation; she looked beautiful, and her happiness was palpable. The memorial photos here brought tears, but also gratitude for her rich family life. I know that her spirit will always fill your hearts and that your lifetime of memories will bring you comfort and joy. My sincerest condolences . . .
