PORTLAND - Barbara Helen McShane, 87, of Portland, died Monday January 7, 2013 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with her loving family by her side. She was born on August 8, 1925 in Portland a daughter of Frederick E. and Bridget Hernon Manchester. She attended St. Dominic's Grammar School and Portland High School. Barbara worked at the Columbia Market during the 1940's. Each day she rode a Taxi to work. The taxi driver became her future husband John. She married John V. McShane on August 8, 1949 at St. Dominic's Church. Following her marriage she began raising a family and was a stay at home mother until her children were in school. She returned to work in the mid 1960's as a hostess at the Splendid Restaurant until 1976. In 1976 she accepted a hostess position at Valley's restaurant until she retired in 1999. Barbara moved to 10 Congress Square Plaza when it opened and was their longest resident. Her greatest joy in recent years was spending time with her three great grandsons. Since 2004 her loving granddaughter Courtney was her primary caregiver. She was predeceased by her parents; husband John in 1971; a sister, Maureen Frisco and a brother, Vincent F. Manchester. Barbara is survived by two daughters, Deborah McShane Nevers of South Portland, Kimberly McShane Drake of South Portland; a sister Christina Franco of Portland; four grandchildren, Courtney Chadbourne and husband Ron of South Portland, Bridget Nevers of South Portland, John Drake of Portland, Ashley Drake of South Portland, three great grandchildren, William Chadbourne, Henry Chadbourne, Oliver Chadbourne all of South Portland; four nephews, Mark Franco and his wife Tammy of Falmouth, Kevin Franco of Arizona, Michael Franco of Parsonsfield, Paul Frisco of South Portland. Visitation will be held 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Friday followed by an 11:00 a.m. service at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland, Maine.
