South Portland- Barbara Boothby King, 94, of Kenneth Road, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at the Springbrook Nursing Center, following a long illness. Barbara was born in Westbrook, Maine on December 2, 1922 the daughter of the late Lawrence L. and Beatrice (Plummer) Townsend. She attended local schools there and in Casco. She graduated from what became Casco High School. On October 25, 1966 she married William L. King Sr. in Portland, Maine. Following high school, Barbara worked for the Thomas House, Luxury Resort, and BM Bean for several years, before going to American Can Company as a production worker, retiring in 1983 after more than thirty years, all the while raising her family. She was a longtime and active member of the Westbrook Order of Eastern Star. In her spare time, she and Bill enjoyed going square dancing, and socializing with their friends and family. Barbara and Bill wintered in Florida for more than twenty years. She enjoyed making dolls and doll clothes for all of her children and grandchildren, and made many beautiful bridal albums along with many other crafts. In failing health, Barbara moved to the Springbrook Nursing Center, where she was known and loved for her kind heart and sharp wit. She was predeceased by a brother: Ernest (Bud) Townsend; two sisters Tina Avery, and Louise Edwards. Barbara is survived by her husband William L. King Sr. of South Portland; sister Velma Flannigan of Oxford, Maine ,daughter, Bonnie and her husband Bruce Rand of Scarborough; two sons, Lawrence and his wife Jean Boothby of Port Washington, WI, and Richard and his wife Janice Boothby of Scarborough; a step daughter, Diane Taliento-King of Sarasotta, Fl; three stepsons, William Jr. and his wife Margarita King of Saco, Kenneth and his wife Laura King of South Portland, and Thomas and his wife Cindy King of South Portland; nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A service will follow at the chapel at 12:00 with the Rev. Dwayne Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in the spring.
