Barbara Ann Foley

Scarborough - Barbara A. Foley, 80, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at home. Born in Portland, Barbara was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Nugent) Henry. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Deering High School Class of 1956. As a junior, Barbara was attending a dance at Cheverus High School where she met Bill Foley. There was no way of knowing, but that night was the start of a lifetime of love, fun and family. Bill and Barbara were married on January 16, 1960 while Bill was in the Air Force. Upon leaving the service, they moved back to Maine for college, where they began their family. Bill's career moved them to New York and Ohio, before returning home to Maine. Despite Barbara's fear of water and boating, they decided to build a house on Sebago Lake where the family would create a lifetime of memories. Once their children were grown, Bill and Barbara decided to move to Scarborough. During her working life, Barbara was employed at Bradlee's in North Windham before spending several years as a seamstress with Cuddledown. To Barbara, this was more than just a job. She enjoyed what she did and was an avid knitter outside of work. Her family remembers Barbara giving selflessly to knit afghans for new born babies and others in need. Barbara and Bill loved to have fun together. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends, making several close friends while they wintered in Naples, Florida. It was said that they were like teenagers when they were in Florida; always on the move, always making plans with friends. As much as she loved Florida, there was nothing that could keep her from her family at the holidays. Barbara and Bill would come home every year for the holidays. She loved to decorate her home, shop for and wrap special gifts for everyone which earned her the nickname "Mrs. Claus." She particularly loved a family tradition of decorating cookies with her grandchildren. Barbara was a humble, selfless, loving and caring confidant who was loyal to a fault. Her family members would never have to guess how much Barbara loved each of them. She demonstrated her deep love every moment of her life. Barbara leaves behind her husband of 58 years, William Foley of Scarborough; children, Timothy Foley and wife Lia of Standish, Linda Vaughan and husband David of Windham, and John Foley of Scarborough. She was the loving grandmother of Marjorie, Liam, Connor, Abigail, Kyle, Zachary, and Samantha and great-grandmother of Rowan. She is also survived by her sister, Jane Henry of Portland and a large group of extended relatives and friends. Visiting Hours celebrating Barbara's remarkable life will be held on Monday, November 12, 2018 from 3:00pm-7:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
