August 24, 1919 ~ April 30, 2018
Scarborough - Barbara Jean (Jordan) Devine, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday after a long illness.
Barbara was born on August 24, 1933, in Portland, Maine. She was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Emma E. (Borst) Jordan of South Portland. She grew up in Thornton Heights, South Portland, and Higgins Beach, Scarborough. She graduated from South Portland High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1951. She was active in many roles of her student council, including treasurer.
After high school Barbara attended the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing where she received her Bachelor's degree, including clinical studies at the Children's Hospital in Washington D.C. Following graduation she moved to Hoboken, NJ, in order to work in research at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, but she soon returned to Maine to marry and raise her three girls.
Barbara settled into a 40 year career at Mercy Hospital, Portland, in the OR. She was known for her quick wit and her ability to calm nerves and reassure patients that everything would be alright.
Family summers were shared with many. Barbara worked as the Camp Nurse during the summer at Camp Pesquasawasis, Poland, ME, in the 60's, and Camp Se-Sa-Ma-Ca, Raymond, NH, in the 70's where Barbara was easily the home away from home Mom to many girls. Barbara's family will fondly remember times at Higgins Beach, sharing time with Nana, eating meals and playing games with family. Barbara was always up for an adventure, whether taking a drive for antiques or packing a lunch for the day at Marjorie's pool, most of all, traveling with "The Girls."
Barbara was predeceased by her siblings, Lillian Flynn, Joseph "Chet" Jordan, Marie Jordan, Stephen Jordan, Marjorie Barber; and her daughter, Patricia Devine. Barbara is survived by her daughters, Barbara Devine of Scarborough, Joanne Devine of South Portland; grandchildren, Alexander Van of South Portland, Elizabeth and her husband Eric Thorpe of Windham; her youngest brother, David and his wife Nancy Jordan and sister in law, Cathy Jordan, all of Cape Elizabeth; along with many nieces and nephews.
