Arthur G. Allaire, 63, of Sanford, died August 10 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland after a long illness.He was born in Sanford on June 19, 1948, the son of Arthur L. and Lorraine (Anderson) Allaire, attended Sanford schools and was a 1967 graduate of Sanford High School.Arthur served in the US Air Force during the Viet Nam era as an MP and a canine officer.Shortly after his return to Sanford, he joined the Sanford Police Department within which he served in several capacities including patrol Corporal, in the criminal investigations division, and in the Community Oriented Policing program. A dedicated police officer, his illness forced his retirement from the force in 2008.Arthur had a special affinity for children. He coached youth football for the Sanford Springvale Youth Athletic Association, coached softball for the Sanford Springvale Little League and maintained an interest in local sports teams for years. As a police officer, he loved to go to the schools in uniform and have lunch with the kids. More recently he focused on his two grandchildren and their various endeavors, especially dance lessons and recitals.Survivors include his mother, Lorraine Allaire of Sanford, his daughter Jill Archambault of Biddeford, his grandchildren Alexis Scott and Mark Scott, both of Sanford, his brother, Steven Allaire of Sanford, and his sister Brenda Witherell and her husband Edwin of South Portland.Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 4-6 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, where a funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 10:00 AM. Burial with military honors will follow at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Sanford High School Athletic Boosters, 52 Sanford High School Blvd., Sanford, ME 04073.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
