Anne M. Powell

March 11, 1933 ~ March 2, 2021
Portland - Anne Millett Powell died March 2nd, at age 87, after a long struggle with lung disease. Her family wishes to thank Birchwoods at Canco Assisted Living and Northern Light Home Care and Hospice, particularly Laurie Fougere, for the fabulous job they did of taking care of her.
Anne was born in New York City and graduated from the Spence School and Smith College. She was a loyal alumna of both schools and never missed a Smith reunion.
She raised her family in New York and summered in Bridgton, ME for more than twenty years. Later she and her former husband, Larson, moved full-time to Falmouth and then Gorham. She worked at Maine Audubon, the Jones Museum of Glass and Ceramics, and the Woman's Literary Union. She also served as a board member and volunteer docent at the Victoria Mansion. Her love of music led her to volunteer for the LARK Society for Chamber Music and the Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival (SLLMF). She was a parishioner and former vestry member of Trinity Church in Portland.
She is survived by her sons, Larson Jr. (Brenda Bethman) of Kansas City, MO, Miles (Rose Le) of Oakton, VA; and her daughter, Anne (Jeffrey Smith) of Merrimac, MA.
Due to the pandemic, burial services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of Portland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SLLMF, PO Box 544, Harrison, Maine, 04040; or Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030
Anne’s daughter, is married to my brother Jeff. Every time I was with her, she was so put together, tall and elegant. But underneath she could be very silly, always smiling, and just a powerhouse of energy. Never shy or at a loss for words, she will be missed. My deepest sympathy to her daughter Anne, and her brothers. Love, Mandy

Anne was a terrific board member she had a passion for getting things done and doing them right. The Sebago Long Lake Music Festival will celebrate 50 years next year, possible because of Anne’s determination and dedication. She had such fun getting ready for the performances each Tuesday night, loved the musicians, the audience members, and her colleagues on the board. Anne enjoyed the after concert receptions where she could get to know the musicians and their families. She set a high standard in everything she did and was always effusive with praise for others.

My Aunt Anne was my father’s youngest sister and the keeper of Millett history. She was a wonderful story teller and even as adults we’d look forward to seeing her and peppering her with questions about “life on the farm”. Anne was fearless, capable, intelligent, and loving — all apparent in a single sentence to anyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

Now I know why I’ve been thinking so much about your mom recently. Anne was a true North Star. She led the way with such constant brightness. Her dedication was evident in everything she did and in every life she touched. She was a beloved friend, mentor, and coworker, plus spending time with her was always a joy. She was fiercely loyal, kind, and fascinating. I share your grief and sadness, while sincerely celebrating her remarkable life and legacy. Sending much love and deepest sympathies to everyone who loved her. Nancy Eaton
