Anne E. Sears

September 10, 1946 ~ November 3, 2025

Anne E. Cribby Sears, 79, of Portland, Maine, passed away on November 3, 2025, with her beloved husband, Art, by her side. She was born on September 10, 1946, in Portland.

A lifelong resident of Portland, Anne grew up on “The Hill” and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1964. She worked as an operator for New England Telephone and spent summers employed at Maine Medical Center before leaving to pursue her degree in Early Childhood Education at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, graduating in 1969. Following graduation, she began her teaching career with first graders at Nathan Clifford School. Teaching “her” first graders was truly Anne’s vocation rather than simply a job. Her dedication and devotion to her students were remarkable and well-known, matched only by the love and partnership she shared with Art.

Anne and Art began their lifelong adventure with a joyful surprise—elopeing in New York when no one expected it. Fifty years later, Art surprised Anne again with a celebration that brought family and friends together for a blessing and renewal of their marriage vows.

Anne and Art loved traveling together—and travel they did: to Bermuda, Ireland, London, Rome, and Hawaii. For many years, they also enjoyed winter escapes as “snowbirds” in Destin, Florida, where they formed enduring friendships that remained strong throughout the years.

Anne will be remembered as a devoted wife, a dear and cherished friend, and a warm and gracious hostess who welcomed loved ones into her home with open arms. She enjoyed playing Bingo (especially when Aunt Doris was there), and she “LOVED” her sweets with great enthusiasm.

Faith was an important part of Anne’s life, and attending weekly Mass and receiving Communion at St. Pius X brought her great comfort. When she was no longer able to attend in person, Jim Pizzo faithfully visited to bring her Communion. After each visit, she would lovingly say, “Jim is one of the good guys.”

Anne will be deeply missed by her devoted husband, and love of her life, Art; her sister, Pat Cribby; her sister in law, Donna Moutsatsos; her lifelong friend, Corrine; her childhood friend, Maureen, who always remembered her sweet tooth; her special cousins and Uncle Sam, with whom she shared many adventures; and her cherished former students.

Anne was predeceased by her mother, Kay (Connolly) Cribby, her father, Bill Cribby, and many beloved family members who passed before her.

In liu of flowers, friends are invited to make a charitable contribution in Anne’s memory to Sacred Heart/St. Dominic Food Pantry, c/o Our Lady of Hope Parish, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland, ME 04103. All dollars will be matched by an anonymous donor $2:$1.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, November 12 at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave., Portland with a burial to follow at Calvary.

  1. Anne, I remember when we were 6 and 8 playing school in your Grampy\’s coal cellar! The coal came in handy as chalk!!! As neighbors we would watch as our dads threw a gallon of ice cream across the yard only to break a window, as we watched the gallon fall three floors to the ground! OOPS!!! We also shared summers at Forest Lake swimming and picking blueberries. Then we were in real school where you were ahead of me and you moved to Mayo Street! Later both our families moved to \

We also shared summers at Foreat Lake swimming and picking blueberries. Then we were in real school where you were ahead of me and you moved to Mayo Street! Later both our families moved to \”the Hill!\” In high school, I remember you as an upper classman at CHS. Then as an upper classman at St. Joe\’s College. I even worked summer shifts with you at the phone company! Later you had both my children in First Grade at Nathan Clifford, a year they both remember fondly. Then when all was said and done we became neighbors at Ledgewood! All through the years we remained friends. A long faithful friendship indeed! May you rest now and enjoy the Heavens …and until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hands…Love, Maureen and family

  2. Rest in peace, Auntie. As a child of one of the many beloved family members who passed before you (her sister, Kathy), I trust my mother will be looking forward to reuniting with you with open arms.

  3. May your soul rest in peace, Auntie. As the child of your sister Kathy, who also predeceased you, I pray that you find each other in the next life.

  4. Junior I am so very sorry to hear of Anne’s passing. God Bless you and your family during this difficult time.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Cousin Michel Salvaggio.

  5. Anne was such a loving, warm, caring and charitable person. We embrace all the wonderful memories we have of spending time with Anne and Art in Destin, at our home in Florida, and in Portland, Maine during our visits back “home”. Anne will be remembered by us as an example to follow in life…..She never had a bad word to say about anyone and her faith was solid. The love she and Art shared was wonderful to witness. Rest in peace, dear cousin and friend.

  6. Mrs. Sears was my first grade teacher at Nathan Clifford School. I have such fond memories of her class. She was encouraging and nurturing and brought out the best in her students. It was was such a treat to run in to her as an adult. It always brought back such warm and wonderful memories.
Sending my sympathy and prayers to her husband and family.

  7. So sorry to hear of Mrs. Sears’ passing. I actually didn’t know here first name was Anne until now as she was always Mrs. Sears to me. I had the privilege of being one of her first graders at Nathan Clifford in the early ’70s, perhaps her second or third year of teaching. I attended the 90th anniversary of Nathan Clifford and was so pleased to see Mrs. Sears there, not surprisingly remembering my name and inquiring about my twin brother. She was always so kind and patient with each of her students; she embodied all the characteristics of what any parent, or you as the student, would want from their first grade teacher. She was one of those teachers who you never forgot because she was so unique. She was a truly lovely person. I’m so sorry for your loss.

  8. You will be sadly missed by everyone you’ve met for your warmth , kindness , consideration for others , and optimism. You have been an amazing friend for over fifty- five years .We’ve shared many teaching collaborations as well as the Four – girl outings and socials with our husbands .You will forever be in the hearts of the McMennamins !

  9. Very sad to read about Anne. It brought me back to memories of Cathedral Grammar school, where I was a classmate of both Anne and Arthur.
Who could forget Anne’s red hair, quiet personality and overall niceness?
Where did all the years go?
    God Bless You Anne.

  10. As my first-grade teacher at Nathan Clifford, she left a lasting impression on my early childhood—one filled with encouragement, gentle guidance, and genuine care. Her classroom was a place where curiosity was nurtured and every child felt seen and valued. I still carry the memories of her smile, her patience, and the way she made learning feel like an adventure. Oh and the songs…. we sang great songs!
She wasn’t just a teacher—she was a source of comfort and inspiration, and her legacy lives on in the hearts of all the students she touched. Mrs. Sears will forever be a cherished part of my life, and I will always remember her with deep gratitude and affection.

  11. I am so sad to hear about Anne leaving all of us. My sincere condolences to Anne’s husband and family… and her close friends. She was a caring and devoted teacher. I was an Ed Tech in her classroom for a brief time but enjoyed spending time with her. I also have to mention that she had some flair with getting dressed up and presenting herself with impeccable taste! My heartfelt wishes go to everyone who knew her and sorry to have lost touch with her.💕
