Alva G. Deschenes, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 25, 2022.
She was born on March 7, 1927, in Sanford, the daughter of Amos Godin and Elizabeth Mauzerolle.
She grew up in Sanford and attended St. Ignatius School.
Alva was a devoted member of the Catholic faith, with a deep love of prayer and the rosary.
She married Edward Deschenes on May 20, 1944, in Sanford and together had four children. She worked in manufacturing until her early retirement from Sprague Electric to become her parents’ caretaker for many years.
Later, she and her husband enjoyed living the Lake Havasu City, AZ until health issues caused them to return to Maine.
Alva loved to knit and crochet, giving many baby sets and afghans as gifts. She also enjoyed playing bingo very much. Singing was one of her talents and she could often be heard singing French songs as her husband played the violin.
Alva was the longest living of her generation on both sides of her family. She was predeceased by her husband of almost 70 years, Ed, a daughter Carol Lee Cote, and a son David Deschenes.
She is survived by a daughter, Geraldine “Gerry” Alexander and her husband Sherman of Sanford, ME, and Lake Havasu City, AZ, a son Dennis Deschenes and his wife Marjorie of Auburn, and daughter in law Pauline Deschenes of Waterboro, grandchildren Brian and his wife Natalie, Ed Alexander and his wife Amy, Steve Alexander and his wife Kerrie, Amy Tremblay and her husband Steve, Nicholette Hamel Destefano and her husband Jack, Kathy Giguere and her husband Dan, Jill Zimmerman and her husband Scott, Tina Thompson and Carollee Deschenes. She also leaves many great and great great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 15, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, 66 North Ave., Sanford with a burial immediately following at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
